2. Hello Duelistgroundz and welcome to Battle City: Retro Formats! Battle City: Retro Formats will be a free for all tournament played between 5 of the most popular formats in Yu-Gi-Oh! history. Format 1: 2005 Goat Control (Exarion-less) Format 2: 2007 Troop Dupe Scoop (Crush Card Virus honor banned) Format 3: 2010 Edison (Pre-The Shining Darkness) Format 4: 2011 Tengu Plant (Pre-Gates of the Underworld) Format 5: 2012 Wind-Up (Pre-Cosmo Blazer) For the Battle City, the formats will be played for a 6 week season. The first 5 weeks will be the regular season, with the 6th and final week being solely for the top cut. To qualify for the top cut, players need to accumulate points through completing and winning their matches. The top 8 players will play off for the right to be called the champion of the season. To encourage the play of all formats, as a pre-requisite to qualify for the top cut, each player MUST complete 5 matches in EACH format. No exceptions. To further encourage the play of all formats, each week will have a designated spotlight format. Each spotlight match offers more points per completion. Standard games: WIN: 2 points LOSS: -1 point TIE: 0 points Spotlight games: WIN: 3 points LOSS: 0 points TIE: 1 point Each player will have his overall win-loss record recorded, as well as his win-loss recorded for each individual format. RULES: 1) You may play any opponent currently entered in the Battle City at any time. 2) You may play as many opponents as you want per day. However, you can only play an opponent in one particular format once a day. 3) All matches are 2/3. 4) A disconnection, regardless of game state or reasoning, is a game loss. Double disconnections will force a replay of the game, NOT the match. 5) A player can play more games in one specific format over others, however, no player is allowed to play 50% of their matches in one particular format. 6) After each match is completed, the winner should report in the match thread. The winner should also state which format was played. NOTE: If a match is reported WITHOUT the format that was played, the match will not count. 7) Players may join whenever they please. The longer it takes for you to sign up however, the more games must be played in a shorter period of time if you want to make the top cut. To sign up for the Battle City, each player must have a Duelistgroundz account as well as a Duelingnetwork account. 4. regionals report etc   Wellington Regional #2 2014   woke up early, walked 20 minutes to the train station and then took the train into town, and then walked another 20 minutes to get to the venue. fuck not being allowed to drive a car by myself yet :I had school for the past few weeks, so i couldn't playtest it very much due to being busy all over the place.   ---   R1 - vs Madolche lost die roll   G1 started awkwardly, but eventually started resolving factory, but was outpaced and he did more damage than i could quickly enough. G2 he opened all backrow, then topped mageleine but i pulled ahead in advantage and ground out all his backrow. Vanity ended his cat and that ended the game. G3 we both opened good, but I never drew factory, going into turn 4 in time where i was able to produce enough field presence with a thunder king coming down on that turn to put the last nail in the coffin.   2:1 win   ---   R2 - vs Geargia lost die roll   G1 I had factory and just plowed through all his cards. dark hole on 2 geargiarmors really put in some work. G2 in a simplified gamestate he ripped an mst for my vanity and went into double bureido into dracossack and didn't manage to end the game. I finished the game a turn after via honor ark. 2:0 win   ---   R3 - vs +1 Fire Fist won die roll   G1 drew double vanity and fiendish to my rabbit/rat opening. good against anything other than fire fist. got wrecked because his normal summons were better than mine. G2 didn't draw optimally and he resolved a curve-ball full house and followed with wolfbark and had the mst for the fiendish on his wolfbark the turn after.   0:2 loss   ---   R4 - vs Madolche lost die roll   G1 his normal summons were bigger than mine again, and he hit the factory with a topped mst and i couldn't recover from his monsters. G2 I drew well and he didn't. this game ended fairly quickly. G3 he drew fairly well, and managed to disrupt any power plays I had, but I drew dark hole and managed to push through some more backrow and leave him in a position where he couldn't get over my gaia/invoker/leviair field.   2:1 win   ---   R5 - bubble vs geargia lost die roll   G1 he set birdman and 5 more, on my ep he geargiagear'd but summoned another monster, i tt'd and was droughted as the rabbits kept coming. I dualitied for a seven tools on the first turn and gave him no leeway. I never ended up using it though. G2 he opened geargiagear+armor and 4 traps; had the mst for the factory too. i ground this game out but was at a lack of cards and eventually my purple cards didn't do anything to combat his board of white cards. G3 he opened the same kind of thing, and this game ended in time, due to an awkward gamestate, i was going to lose if i stalled out due to a 2000 life difference and he had the fiendish for the last push. tough luck in the end.   1:2 loss   ---   I ended up at 10th place, missing the top-8 due to something uncontrollable. I played a Tier-2 deck in the end, so i can't be too frustrated about it.   ---   Decklist
http://i.imgur.com/hd3p6Ar.png
Decklist - Written Form   Monsters: 13 3 Wind-Up Rabbit 3 Wind-Up Rat 3 Wind-Up Shark 1 Wind-Up Magician 1 Wind-Up Warrior 1 Thunder King Rai-Oh 1 Cardcar D   Spells: 13 3 Wind-Up Factory 3 Mystical Space Typhoon 3 Pot of Duality 2 Fire Formation - Tenki 1 Dark Hole 1 Book of Moon   Traps: 14 3 Fiendish Chain 2 Vanity's Emptiness 2 Trap Stun 1 Seven Tools of the Bandit 1 Bottomless Trap Hole 1 Compulsory Evacuation Device 1 Solemn Warning 1 Torrential Tribute 1 Dimensional Prison 1 Mirror Force   Extra Deck: 15 1 Wind-Up Zenmaines 1 Leviair the Sea Dragon 1 Ghostrick Alucard 1 M-X-Saber Invoker 1 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon 1 Abyss Dweller 1 Diamond Dire Wolf 1 Gagaga Cowboy 1 Maestroke the Symphony Djinn 1 Number 101: Silent Honor Ark 1 Photon Papilloperative 1 Number 61: Volcasaurus 1 Tiras, Keeper of Genesis 1 Wind-Up Arsenal Zenmaioh 1 Gaia Dragon the Thunder Charger   Side Deck: 15 2 Effect Veiler 2 Maxx "C" 2 Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo 1 Dimensional Fissure 1 Compulsory Escape Device 1 Soul Drain 2 Dust Tornado 2 Full House 2 Light-Imprisoning Mirror

photos didn't turn out quite how i wanted them to, but it's whatever.       Pro's   factory cool opponents trap stun bladefender giving me the strength to play 100% dodging all the bujin players getting better again   Con's bubble loss admittedly a pretty shitty maindeck, could have been better with hindsight geargia is a pain to play against not owning overworkeds losing 4 die rolls geargiagear is aids     the other decks in top-8 at the end of swiss were   Noble Knights +1 Fire Fist Geargia Karakuri Madolche Inzektors Infernity 3.5 Fire Fist Geargia Karakuri --- Bujin Wind-Up Bujin +1 Fire Fist Gravekeeper's +1 Fire Fist Blackwing Cyber Dragon   thanks for the read! i know the maindeck isn't optimal, i felt like i was missing the triple recklesses the most, because too often i'd be too restricted in plays to pull ahead, etc etc vanity was a bad choice in the end, that and the second tenki was superfluous.

Not only does it lets you see your Factory as quickly as possible (which is obviously crucial) but being able to dig for defensive traps when you're trying to win off of Rabbit beat and general combo pieces is also very important.   I'm also really liking 3 Cardcar D, because it and Warrior work very well in tandom with the one copy of Redox, since you generally want to be using your normal summon on your Wind-Up monsters over Cardcar as soon as you get the ball rolling, which leads to Cardcar being used as good fodder for Redox's effect. There are also random spots where Redox lets you put the last 1600 points of damage on the board or it walls your opponent for years under Skill Drain which is neat.   I opted not to run Tour Guide, Bear, TKRO etc in the maindeck because I don't want to have too many normal summons in the deck (especially whilst Factory is up), and when I haven't really gotten the Factory setup (or the ball rolling in general) I'd rather be using my normal summon on Cardcar to dig for more defensive traps/combo pieces.   Tour Guide doesn't really do that much by herself outside of Invoker because of how underwhelming Rank 3 monsters are right now, and the fact that I really don't want to run a suboptimal card like Night Assailant or Tour Bus to justify playing 3 Guide. Regarding Bear, my general issue with the card was that it was a card that I didn't want to see when I didn't have a Tenki, and even when I have a Tenki I usually found myself searching for Rabbit long before I searched for Bear.   Memory of an Adversary has been really solid over D Prison in testing, since it actually helps this deck deal with Yamato more efficiently since it dodges Turtle, and it also has some niche interactions against certain cards, like being able to take Bear/Gorilla with Adversary and then use them to pop shit with your Tenkis/search Formations and using their monsters to Xyz (kinda like a pseudo Mind Control, which is pretty relevant considering how many good Level 4s there are atm)   One of the main problems that I've been having is getting the extra deck down to 15 ideal cards. There are a plethora of cards that I want to find room for (Lavalval Chain, Blackship, Angineer, Shark Fortress etc) but I simply can't find anything that I want to cut to fit them in.   tl;dr Wind-Ups are p cool

  7. wind up september 2013

Hi everyone! It's been a while since i posted something here but well i have almost skipped last format and just recently got back into the game! I built this deck like a couple of days ago so i have limited testing with it (like 40 games agains dragons, fire fist and mermails). 3 wind-up rabbit 3 wind-up rat 3 wind-up shark 3 redox 3 maxx "C" 2 tragoedia 2 wind-up warrior 2 summoner monk 1 wind-up magician 3 wind-up factory 3 d.d.r. 3 typhoon 3 forbidden lance 2 tenki 1 book of moon 1 dark hole 1 mind control 1 gold sarcophagus Extra: 1 big eye 1 dracossack 1 gaia 1 volca 1 tiras 1 zenmaioh 1 papilloperative 1 dweller 1 diamond dire wolf 1 maestroke 1 cowboy (still debating if i should play this or acid golem but i stole some games with it so i'm not too sure about it) 1 leviair 1 soul of silvermountain (this shit is so op) 1 zenmaines 1 invoker No side at the moment but essentially there will be 3 mind drains and 3 veilers plus some useful stuff. Deck is still a beast at generating card advantage trough rabbit-factory and drawing warriors is not the worst thing ever since they can be discarded for redox effect so that's why i play 2. Redox is so broken in this, using rat or mages multiple times while loading grave with rabbits/warriors/dead "C" is also a nice plus. I also love redox for it's ability to banish rats from grave to bring them back woth ddrs. The only thing in the main deck that i'm not too sure about are monks since it getting veilered sucks a lot. Sorry for my bad english as always.
  8. Hi, my name is Nick and this is my report for the Seattle regional I played in on June 1, 2013. I didn't do as well I would have liked, but am posting anyway to get the deck list out there. I have played Yu-Gi-Oh since the release of LOB, but have played competitively for just the last year and a half. I used Wind-Up with an Earth engine. The list is as follows:   Monsters (20)   x3 Wind-Up Rabbit x3 Wind-Up Rat x3 Wind-Up Shark x2 Wind-Up Warrior x2 Tour Guide From The Underworld x2 Maxx "C" x2 Redox, Dragon Ruler Of Boulders x1 Cardcar D x1 Swift Scarecrow x1 Grandsoil The Elemental Lord   Spells (11)   x3 Wind-Up Factory x2 Fire Formation-Tenki x3 Mystical Space Typhoon x1 Monster Reborn x1 Dark Hole x1 Heavy Storm   Traps (10) x2 Torrential Tribute x2 Dimensional Prison x2 Bottomless Trap Hole x1 Solemn Judgment x1 Solemn Warning x1 Trap Stun x1 Memory Loss   Extra Deck x1 M-X-Saber Invoker x1 Soul Of SIlvermountain x1 Leviair The Sea Dragon x1 Wind-Up Zenmaines x1 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon x1 Temtempo The Percussion Djinn x1 Diamond Dire Wolf x1 Number 16: Shock Master x1 Maestroke The Symphony Djinn x1 Photon Butterfly Assassin x1 Abyss Dweller x1 Number 61: Volcasaurus x1 Tiras, Keeper of Genesis x1 Shark Fortress x1 Gaia Dragon, The Thunder Charger   Side Deck   x2 Fossil Dyna Pachycephalo x2 Snowman Eater x1 Puppet Plant x1 Electric Virus x2 Messenger of Peace x2 Dimensional Prison x2 System Down x1 Enemy Controller x1 Mind Crush x1 Trap Stun   The Report   I start the day by paying $25 for parking. Excellent. My cousin Chris, my friend Sam and I walk to the short line and fill out our registration forms and get our packs. Chris is using Dino Rabbit today, and Sam is using Nurse Burn. LOL. On the way to a table, a friend of mine from locals points down at the table and says, "First pack." I look down and see a Dragossack. We sit near him and open our packs. I open my first pack, then turn to him and say, "Look, first pack," showing him my own Dragossack. I wanted to build this deck at first, but I would later sell the card for $100, which pretty much paid for the whole trip, which included the entry fee, parking, and the Dicks. I get a set of foreign secret Wind-Up Rabbits from a buddy, and pick up the second Redox. I fill out my list and then help a friend fill his out, and once this is done the judges collect the lists and the tournament begins, and at this point I have not slept for around 18 hours.   Round 1: vs. Guy from Locals He didn't show, so I get a freebie. Yay. I instead watch the duel next to me between Battlin' Boxers and Constellar. Every time the Battlin' Boxer duelist does damage to his opponent, he stares right at me with a very serious look on his face for a few seconds, then continues dueling. This, along with his nasally voice, provides for some good entertainment. 1-0   Round 2: vs. Luke (Elemental Dragons) This is my first time playing against this deck. Game 1: I remember him having a Dragossack with one token on board. I make Butterfly Tiras to attack token and pop Dragossack at the end of battle phase. This leaves him at 200. I am unable to put 200 damage on board for the rest of the game. I really wish I had played Cowboy. Game 2: Memory Loss, Scarecrow, and Redox let me hold on a little longer, but I make no headway and am just avoiding the inevitable. 1-1   Round 3: vs. Robert (Malefic Skill Drain Gravekeeper) Game 1: This is Rabbit Beatdown. He has very little monsters and I have traps for the few he does get. Game 2: Royal Tribute Game 3: I beat him down with Rabbit for a couple turns. He eventually Skill Drain Barbaroses me, and I take 1600 when he attacks Rabbit. I have Trap Stun down, but wait until next turn to use it so I can Rat Shark into Invoker Volcasaurus for the GG. 2-1   Lunch Round: I eat a bunch of Dicks. Nick 1 Dicks 0   Round 4: vs. Jacob (Chain Beat) Game 1: He opens Thunderbird set 2 and I assume this is Evilswarm. I Tenki, he banishes, I Rabbit Factory and he takes the 1500. I search in end phase. He draws and Tenki for Wind-Up Rabbit. He swings with Thunderbird, sets a 3rd backrow and ends without summoning. I hit him with Rabbit a couple of times, and use a Memory Loss Torrential play to get rid of the Thunderbird. I finish shortly thereafter with a Trap Stun followed by Rat Shark Grandsoil. Game 2: I open subpar, and he hits me with Thunderbird several times early on. I Memory Loss Torrential again, but I have no follow up. I activate Messenger with only 700 LP, attempting to hold on, but it gets me nowhere. Game 3: I Judgment for 4k early on and hit him with a couple Rabbit attacks. Again I Trap Stun and finish him with Redox plays that result in a Shark Fortress and Invoker, among other monsters. 3-1   Round 5: vs. Big Tony (Evilswarm) This is someone I know from locals, and I know he is very good. I was expecting E Dragons here because a mutual friend had said Tony needed Dragossacks for regionals at locals a few days ago. Game 1: I open Factory Rabbit Dimensional Prison. He Rescue Rabbits, and the surprise is evident on my face. He makes the mistake of attacking with Heliotrope. I banish one, and take the other directly. It dies at the end of the turn after he sets a couple. Two turns later I Trap Stun and OTK with Shark Fortress. Game 2: Here I make the mistake of going off under Maxx "C". He draws the Veiler for Invoker and it leaves me in a terrible position, allowing him to capitalize. Game 3: At this point an army of his friends are around the table watching. I make a couple small pushes, and reduce him to 5450 before the game slows down and I am forced to activate Messenger of Peace. He resolves Cornship twice, and sets up with an Evilswarm Nightmare. I Trap Stun after several turns of nothing, and he Maxx "C" the Tour Guide. I make Zenmaines and end up running over Nightmare, refusing to make the same mistake as last game. A couple turns later he summons Kerykeion. I allow this, and Judgment the Ophion. On my turn, I go off, and finish him with a Shark Fortress and Zenmaines swinging directly. I honestly love playing Evilswarm with this deck, grinding out a victory is such a thrill. 4-1   Round 6: vs. Armando (Dark World) Another player I thought was using Dragons. Game 1: He begins by Alluring and banishing Dark Creator. What? After a Card Destruction for no DW effects and some other draw cards, he ends with Grapha and two sets, and Gates. I draw and he Eradicators spells. I chain my only spell, MST, to destroy Gates, and reveal the rest of my hand. He Eradicators traps next turn. I make an attempt at a comeback, and after Scarecrowing to save my LP I drop Grandsoil. This almost turns it around, but he drops a 3k Trag to seal the GG. Game 2: I remain calm siding, telling myself this is what Dark World does, it's a game one deck. I get deck Dev'd this game, and am left with a Rabbit and Factory. I hit him with Rabbit, and then take a Grapha directly. On my turn he attempts to Eradicator, and I Trap Stun. This leaves him open for a gameshot with Shark Fortress Invoker Rabbit, which goes through. Game 3: He opens badly, and after taking a few direct hits he is at 3600. He makes a Zenmaines, and I Bottomless. My Rabbit is banished, so he is forced to Zenmaines himself and detach a second material. On my turn I go off, ending with Tiras, Invoker, Shark Fortress, and Redox. I activate Fortress' effect targeting Tiras, and he sees this is more than enough to run over Zenmaines and hit for game, even through a Trag. 5-1   Round 7: vs. Chancy (Spellbook) I am on table 3 at this point, and have the honor of listening to Alexander Thomas, who is on table 1 with Madolche, yell at his opponent for saying he doesn't think Jennifer Aniston is hot. I played my opponent round 1 of my last regional, so I know he means serious business. Game 1: I open Rabbit Factory, and win the die roll. Doesn't matter. I also reduce him to 200 LP on turn 3. Doesn't matter. Judgment Days every turn, along with Tower, allow him to recycle his Fates very efficiently, and putting Jowgen on board when possible forces me to waste my battle phase to kill it with Rabbits. The scary part is he didn't even sack me, its just that once you Judgment day once, you will constantly have a way to get another one back.  Had I ran Cowboy in my extra deck, I was in a position to bait the Fate and then finish him. Sigh, I need Cowboy. Game 2: See game 1. Fate and Jowgen ruin my day. This guy was very fun to play against, and he is a very good and respectful player. He seemed interested in my deck idea, and liked that I had taken it up this far. He is a large part of the reason I am posting it here, as he suggested it. I hope to see/play him again in the future. 5-2   Round 8: vs. Chris (Constellar) sigh Game 1: I misplay super hard here. My field is Rabbit Rat Factory, with Torrential and Prison set. He has Tenki, a dead Fiendish, a set, and Sheratan on board with two in hand. He normals Sombre and I allow it, he grabs Kaus and normals it. Now, I have no idea why I didn't Torrential and chain Rabbit here to banish Rat and search, but I didn't. Of course, he makes Omega and this ends up winning him the game. Game 2: I take a couple early hits, pound him with Rabbit, then finish with a bunch of XYZ summons.  Game 3: Pleaides This is that one that got away. I feel like I should have won game 1. Oh well. I resolve that come hell or high water I will win my final round. 5-3   Round 9: vs. Andrew (Hunder) And I do. Game 1: He opens Stardust equipped with Vylon Prism. I set TT and Prison. He summons Giraffe, attacks. I take it, then attempt to Prison the dragon. He is very quick to point out Giraffe's effect, which I should have read. Next turn, I make Tiras and kill Giraffe. I target Stardust with it's ability, and he attempts to sacrifice Stardust to negate. I point out it will not destroy Tiras, and he calls a judge. She agrees with me. I take the game from here. Game 2: It's T-King beatdown. I have a couple search cards that I can't use. I finally bait the negation by making Zenmaines. I revive Thunderking with Reborn, as I feel it is fairly useful against his deck. Next turn, I normal Warrior and make Wolf. I employ Rabbit shenanigans with my on field bunny against his backrow. With T-King under Wolf, I Tenki and attack, then end. He kills my Wolf on his next turn. On my turn I normal my second Rabbit and start applying pressure. He is low on life and begins to use traps to stall for time. Next turn he Cylinders my Rabbit, and I chain effect. He calls a judge, insisting that I still take the damage. The judge explains that I don't, and when I Warning the monster he draws on his next turn he scoops it up. 6-3   After tournament: I eat a bunch of Dicks. Nick 2 Dicks 0   So after all is said and done I place 35th out of what I believe was 280. I am pleased, considering my deck choice, but I missed my invite by 3 spots. Eh, whatever. After the tourney, I would definitely remove Abyss Dweller or Butterfly and replace it with a Cowboy. Shark Fortress was definitely the best card all day. I still can't believe its a common for how little restrictions it has. I may consider a 3rd Redox and second Cardcar. A second Memory Loss is definitely happening, that card worked well. Bottomless has to go, it did nothing for me. I never sided Dyna once, as it clashes with my deck. I will definitely be adding Droll and Lock Bird.   Props Pulling Dragossack Sam winning one round with Nurse Burn Jake for the foreign Rabbits Shark Fortress and Trap Stun Having a really good match with Big Tony Getting to table 3 with this deck Doing better than expected Chancy Dicks   Slops 6-3 This shitty format $25 parking Misplaying terribly against Constellar 29 hours of no sleep Buying 6 packs of LTGY and getting nothing but Gauntlet Launcher Missing invite by 3 spots
  9. March 2013 Wind-Ups

Although some of the decks power plays are somewhat limited, the deck can still function very well. The deck can still toolbox off of Factory, and make some solid plays off of Rabbit, Rat and Shark.   Why Summoner Monk? Well Monk + Shark + Magician in deck is the equivalent of the Maestroke Tiras play that Magician Shark can do in this format, there is another combo: Hand: Summoner Monk, Spell card, Wind-Up Shark Deck: Wind-Up Magician, Wind-Up Rat, Wind-Up Shark, Wind-Up Solcier/Wind-Up Warrior Summon Summoner Monk Discard a Spell, Grab wind up magician Summon shark Use magician for wind up rat Turn monk and magician into a papilloperative Use operative on rat by detaching magician Use rat for magician Use shark's effect for lv 3 Magician activates, grab a lv 5 wind up or a shark and turn it 5 Make invoker with rat and the lv 3 shark Use invoker for a wind up warrior, turn it lv 5 Xyz warrior and the lv 5 wind up you got with magician for shark fortress Detach for fortress and target fortress 4800 fortress + 1600 invoker + 2100 papillo = 8500 Alternatively, you can grab a lv 4 wind up instead of lv 5 in step 9 with the magician and leave the wind up warrior lv 4 in 11 and xyz magician + warrior/soldier + shark for shock master.    Wind-Up Soldier is there for M-X-Saber Invoker, which is like a weaker version of Zenmaighty in the deck. It's also a decent beater that can get over Thunder King and it can trigger Factory. Suggestions?
  10. Hey everyone! Anthony here, trying to catch up on the sleep I didn't get during Miami. Despite me feeling so out of it right now, Miami was definitely worth the trip. So, without further ado, lets begin!   Thursday/Friday        So it all begins on Thursday. It's Valentine's Day, and the first thing that happens is my girlfriend breaking up with me. For reasons not to be explained here, I was planning on ending the relationship as well, so I guess it worked out for the best. With that, I had a Java common that evening, and so I spent the whole day studying. 6pm rolls around, and I'm sitting in the first half of my class listening to my teacher ramble on about things I learned about last semester (seriously, CS classes are way too easy sometimes). Second half finally arrives, and I proceed to destroy my common. Strings could never be any easier. Afterwards, I head back to my dorm and prepare for the longest night of my life.      See, my flight was scheduled to leave at 6:45am, and my friend who I was travelling with was picking me up at 4am. I decided on whether or not to pull an all-nighter or get some sleep. Unfortunately, I picked the former (HUGE MISTAKE), and I got so fucked over. I had things to keep me busy, such as packing for the actualy trip (I'm such a slacker), playing some good ol' Pokemon Black 2, and talking to friends. Only thing was that I had to do this while my other room mates were sleeping, so I had to be odee quiet. I decide to play Allen Pennington's Wind-Up deck that mained three Tenkis and two Bears. I was testing the deck out and it was surprisingly consistent and just smooth overall. I never ran into any dead hands and it certainly fit my play style, so I was certainly comfortable with it. Allen, if you are reading this, you did a really great job with this one. Anyways, so after a couple of long and utterly uneventful hours, I finally leave for the airport.      We both get there and do the usual procedure. I absolutely had to eat breakfast, because if not, I was probably going to die (thank god for that sausage, egg and cheese sandwich!). We get on the plane and we set off for Charlotte, due to our flight having a layover. I tried getting some sleep, but I came to the conclusion that I cannot go to sleep on any plane ride, so in other words, gg for me. We finally arrive at Miami, and I must say, there is a significant difference between Miami and Miami Beach, and the latter is so much better. We get to our hotel, the Ramada, and to this day, I will recommend to everyone out there, DO NOT stay in this shitty hotel. It sucked in so many ways. Room keys didn't work half the time, paint was coming off the wall, and just bad hotel service overall. What's worse is what proceeded to come afterwards. We get ready to go to pre-regs, and so we ask the concierge if he can call us a taxi. He does, and he tells us 10 minutes (the magic number is 10 and you'll see why). after about 15-20 min of waiting, we ask again, and he gives us the same answer (I guess :/). After about the same time, the taxi STILL didn't show up, and we simply realized that Miami has the absolute worst taxi service ever. It finally came, but the fun didn't stop there! Our taxi driver could not be any more retarded. He didn't know where to go and took the longest possible route to the convention center. O OK. We finally arrive at pre-regs an hour and a half later.      I thought the hall was going to be open, but I found out that it was just a come-and-go sort of thing, so I got there and filled out my information. I pulled absolute shit and my friend pulled a Dire Wolf so it was all good. Afterwards, I met up with my friend, Tom Mak, and we just chill for a few. Afterwards, we decide to head back, and guess what, more fun ensues with the taxi cab service! See, we relied on my friend's friend to make the travel arrangements for us. Apparently, he is a total dumbass and didn't realize that there was a Double Tree hotel right by the convention center (nice job guy -___-). We try calling about eight, EIGHT, different taxi companies, and NONE of them pick up. We were furious. We eventually get one after speaking to the concierge at the Double Tree, and so the taxi cab driver tells us that they've been waiting for us there for a long time. Lol, I didn't know that the convention center and the hotel were the exact same thing. We eat at Chili's and head back to the hotel to test a bit. My friend decided to run Wind-Ups with mained TKR, so I managed to get some mirrors in. I consistently beat the deck, so I was feeling more confident than ever now.   Saturday      We get up, shower, and head off for battle. On the ride there, we hit up Anthony Alvarado and discuss our card choices. Although he and many other people chose to play Dire Wolf in the extra, I chose not to, and decided to stick with Utopia because I felt it to be more reliable, durable, and ultimately a better choice. I meet up with some friends from the east coast. I decide to go over to the Gaming ETC table and try to sell some cards, but there was a guy with like 10+ binders worth of valuable cards so I opt out of waiting in line. I find out that my friend James Guerrero is there as well, so him, Jordano, my friend Frank, and I are the ones who are repping Jersey at this YCS. Round one comes up, and we are off to battle.   Round One: Fire Fist Pre-Game: Oh god, that was the longest wait to start a YCS EVER. There was a problem with the PA system so we had to wait longer than usual. Afterwards, it was time. Nice guy sitting in front of me. Native to Miami.   Game One: He goes first and opens up Nin-Ken Dog with three backrows. I try making plays with Bear and Tenki but he has outs to all of them so I fall over to Tensu+Gorilla abuse.   Game Two: The guy thinks that I'm playing Fire Fist, so when he sees a Trap Stun into Tour Guide+Shark play, he is instantly confused. I win shortly afterwards.   Game Three: The key turning point in this round was when I Torrential'd his board of Tiger King, Nin-Ken Dog, and Barbaros. After that, it was Rabbit beatdown from there.   1-0   Round Two: Chaos Dragon Pre-Game: Guy is an experienced player and pretty much knows his stuff. This won't be easy.   Game One: Magician+Shark to victory!   Game Two: We both get ourselves to run each other out of resources, and so it's the luck of the draw at this point. I know that he still has a third Lightpulsar in his deck, so when I make Temtempo and detach his Leviair's material, I opt to take out the Leviair. Next turn, he tops the Lightpulsar and proceeds to win.   Game Three: Tour Guide+Shark puts the nail in the coffin.   2-0   Round Three: Dino Rabbit Pre-Game: My opponent almost showed up late but we started on time. Cool guy, so no worries.   Game One: He goes first with Laggia and three backrow. I try doing things, but you know how things go. Not gonna lie, the game dragged out a bit longer, but his second Laggia sealed the game.   Game Two: It's a total grind game here, but in the end, time is called and I just stall out with Messenger for the rest of the duel. Couldn't do much else. Ended up with a draw.   2-0-1   Round Four: Fire Fist (Courtney Waller) Pre-Game: We know each other from YCS Ohio in 2011 and so we simply catch up on stuff. I know that he's arguably one of the best Fire Fist players so I had to be prepared for this.   Game One: He has a really good set-up and I can't do anything. Mirror Force kills me and I scoop.   Game Two: See game one, except with Call of the Haunted raping me even more lol.   2-1-1   Round Five: Sea Lancer Frogs Pre-Game: Wasn't too upset. I was still in it so it was all good. I see a Caius when the guy shuffles so I automatically think Plants, but then I see a Swap Frog and I'm like, oh, ok.   Game One: He sets up a field of Sea Lancer and Gachi, but I get over it and win.   Game Two: Mage+Shark and he can't keep up, even with his set Reaper and Gachi.   3-1-1   Round Six: Fire Kings Pre-Game: Guy shows up late and we start at game two.   Game Two: Guy opens up some random Hazy Flame guy. I Tour Guide+Shark him and have answers to all of his plays. Bottomless tells Garunix to go home.   4-1-1   Round Seven: Mermail Pre-Game: Guy is from France, and the person next to us tries to stall out the whole game by claiming that his opponent's dice are weighted because he rolled 1's. Lol scrub.   Game One: I make a big play with Abyss Dweller and Tiras, but he Black Roses my board and I can't recover.   Game Two: I manage to draw one Soul Drain, but he spaces it and proceeds to go 8,400 die. Must be nice.   4-2-1   Round Eight: Agents Pre-Game: Just keep going through my matches. That was my top priority.   Game One: Guy tries to summon Venus and I Bottomless it, and he chains My Body as a Shield! LOL oh god. He draws the nuts and wins.   Game Two: I open DiFi and proceed to win while he has Orange Light and Honest in hand.   Game Three: Tenki and Bear go in on this one, and I control the game from there.   5-2-1   Round Nine: 48-card Mermail (oh god) Pre-Game: I knew he was playing Mermail from before, but I certainly didn't expect his deck size. This was going to be fun...   Game One: He stalls with Abyssdine and Abysslinde but I manage to pull through with Bears.   Game Two: This one goes out all the way towards being close to time. I try to make a comeback play, but he Maxx "C"s so I insta-scoop in order to take it to game three.   Game Three: I open up well and he doesn't. It's all good from there.   6-2-1        Awesome! I made day two! I decided to keep on playing because I know that sometimes, X-2-1's can make it if they have good tiebreakers. I end up getting 95th, and I head to bed soon afterwards. My friend James made 6th so Jersey was still strong.   Sunday      Regular procedure. Get up, shower, and head off.   Round Ten: Mermail Pre-Game: I saw him the round earlier and I knew what he was playing.   Game One: Magician+Shark for the plus.   Game Two: He doesn't seem to get anything going and I just eat away at his life points with Rabbit+Rat plays.   7-2-1   Round Eleven: Wind-Up Pre-Game: We get deck checked and we're both all good.   Game One: I open up the best hand of the weekend: Tour Guide, Shark, Starlight, Compulsory, Torrential, and Fiendish Chain. I win.   Game Two: He opens up with Dyna and a set monster and I simply set a Magician. I then play Factory and Dark Hole his board of Dyna, Rabbit, and his other Dyna, trying to bait the Rabbit, but he doesn't blink. I Reborn it and proceed to gain a lot of advantage.   8-2-1        Sweet! I did it! Now all I had to do was wait for the final standings. Unfortunately, I ended up getting 36th overall, which upset me quite a bit, but it was alright in the end. James topped and made it to top 16, so I was happy for him.   Closing Statements      This weekend was so awesome, in so many ways. I did well, everyone congratulated me, and I made a lot of money afterwards. Hung out with New Yorkers and ARG, and we see Tahmid playing some guy for $50s. The next day, my friend and I arrive at Charlotte again for another layover, and we both see James and Jordano sitting there. We find out that their car got totalled, so they had to take a plane. I finally arrive back in Jersey, and that was the end of that.      I want to thank everyone at home and at the event for supporting me. I know very well that I am capable of going far in this game, I simply need to keep up the good work.   The Plusses 1. Destroying my Java common 2. Meeting up with friends 3. Hanging with Paul, Joe, and many others. See you guys next time! 4. Friends at home supporting me 5. Coming so far, in this game and at the event   The Minuses 1. Pulling an all-nighter when I should have slept 2. Terrible hotel 3. Terrible taxi service 4. Giant rat is just amazing right now and in this deck it has to ability to toolbox for any answer I need with conjunction with the wind-up engine while at the same time maintaining field presence. I can search trooper to bump thunder kings, mole for pesky xyzs or synchros, wind-up rabbit, or wind-up rat for any rank 3 xyz i need. Also Tragoedia and Gorz are just amazing with wind-up rabbit and help to combat problem cards like thunder king. Also Soul of Silver mountain is quite amazing in this deck and can be easily made with the wind-up line up I am running. This deck plays a lot like Synchro Plants in that it has a lot of answers and plays a lot of cards that are just good on their own which makes the deck more consistent. Currently I am trying out 2 grandsoils and have not drawn it in enough situations to have an opinion on the card and the number of Grandsoils I am playing. But having the rat engine and troopers I can fuel the graveyard quite quickly while at the same time, I have cards like wind-up rat and call of the haunted to fix my graveyard if I over mill. Thoughts?

  22. Wind-Up - Discussion

The "Wind-Up" or "Zenmai" in the OCG made there debut in set Generation Force and further supported in Photon Shockwave. All the monsters in this archetype are based of the appearance of classic wind-up toys hence the name of the archetype. They specialize in altering the levels of themselves and special summoning each other from the graveyard and or deck in order to swarm and create easy access to Xyz Summons to generate advantages. However, with these effects comes the price that their effects can only be used once while face-up on the field. By playing to their strengths this deck easily creates Rank 5 and more recently Rank 3 Xyz monsters to quickly overpower your opponent. Monsters: During your Main Phase: You can target 1 "Wind-Up" monster in your Graveyard; change this card to face-up defense position and Special Summon that target in face-up defense position. This effect can only be used once while this card is face-up on the field. Wind-Up Rat is the glue that holds this deck together. It is an essential part of the deck and what makes us able to keep up with the likes of agents,T.G., and plants. Rat is also the main component in the hand loop which I will discuss more later as it has it's own section. Instant rank 3 Xyz, special summon a magician from grave to set up a big play, or special summoning a used kitten from the grave to remove a problem monster. I try not to tell you what to run in your deck but run 3. No less. A decent card in it's own right with 1600 attack it can run over most of the common set up monsters such as earth, warwolf, etc. With Wind-Up rat this card becomes one of our main win condition. Wind-Up rat and hunter work together to make a terrifying loop that makes your opponent discard nearly their entire hand. Run 1-2. When a "Wind Up" monster is Normal or Special Summoned to your side of the field: You can special summon this card from your hand. Once per turn You can activate one of these effects. -Increase this card's level by 1 until the End Phase -Decrease this card's level by 1 until the End Phase This card is just nuts. Our ultimate Xyz utlity comes in the form of a shark. Shark makes any Wind-Up you draw with it that's not named kitten instantly live. Drawing hunter and shark opens access to the discard loop. Drawing soldier and shark opens access to rank 4 and 5 Xyzs such as roach or tiras. Magician and shark opens any combo you like. Whether that be decreasing sharks level by 1 then summoning hunter off magician or increasing sharks level by 1 and summoning soldier(or even rat if you have soldier or another shark in grave) off magician to Xyz combo out the ass. Wind-Up Shark is also extremely flexible and bait Maxx C with ease with them getting a +1 at the very least. Shark offers too much utility to not be played at 3 in my opinion however I have seen people use 2. With Wind-Up Rat being released soon Wind-Up Magician has been knocked down a few pegs but that in know way, shape, or form means his effect isn't still amazing. He has the nifty effect to summon another Wind-Up from the deck when a Wind-Up effect is activated allowing for instant Xyz into Utopia, Roach, or whatever Rank 4 the situation calls for. With a solid 1800 defense stat it ensures it can take a hit or two from most common meta cards. Something that should be taking into consideration is the fact that Wind-Up Magician activates in the damage step as well. Magician also ahs synergy with rat being able to go into Daigusto Emeral with ease and putting back your used rats and Zenmaighty to restart your loop again. During either player's turn: You can target 1 "Wind-Up" monster you control; banish it until your next Standby Phase. This effect can be used only once while this card is face-up on the field. (background on Rabbit goes here) Not much to say here. Our boss monster is a generic rank 3 Xyz. No one else does generic rank 3 Xyzs better. And with the addition of tour bus from the underworld, opening TGU is just as good as opening hunter and instant fusion. Run 3 if you can.2 Level 3 MonstersOnce per turn: you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special summon 1 "Wind-Up" monster(from your hand or deck). When a "face-up" monster you control is destroyed and sent to the graveyard: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to target that monster; add it to your hand. Our boss monster and a fairly good one at that(which we deserved after that piece of crap zenmaister claimed to be our ace >_>). And one of the main components to the loop. Special summon any Wind-Up from deck whether that be another rat, kitten to get over a problem card, magician to set up some plays, or hunter to tribute the used up zenmaighty and make them discard. Run 3 in extra deck. Other Options: Tour bus from the underworld Wind-Up Juggler Wind-Up Warrior Reborn Tengu Genex Ally birdman Summoner Monk Spells: This card basically looks at blackwings and says "Ujelly?" Yes, we get our own version of black whirlwind. Every time a wind-up effect activates we get to search a wind-up and add it to our hand which is always nice. Just as like black whirlwind, Konami has given this card the same ruling which is, if multiple copies are on the field when a Wind-Up monster effect is activated. You can activate the effect of all Wind-Up factories on the field. This card should be a no brainer. Instant Xyz card with Wind-Up Soldier or Wind-Up Hunter. One of the biggest cards you will use this for is Tiras, which is just an exceptional card. Now that we have added Wind-Up Rat to our toy box, getting a monster to the graveyard becomes that much more important. Foolish burial lets you send any monster you choose to the graveyard for Rat's effect. Summoning Zenmaighty back and giving it a free Xyz material to summon another rat/magician/hunter from deck. Other options: Obvious staple traps Fiendish Chains Horns of the Phantom Beast Spring Rewinding Compulsory evacuation device Ultimate Offering The Loop The greatest gift we received in order of chaos was the addition of wind-up rat and Zenmaighty. Those cards, along with wind-up hunter, opened up a nifty loop that makes your opponent send most(all if you open the nuts.) of their hand to the graveyard using Wind-Up Hunter's effect. Keep in mind that Wind-Up Hunter does not discard but send to grave, therefore Dark World and Fabled will NOT have their effects activated when sent to grave by hunter making it even more effective against DW decks which are crowding the meta. With the addition of tour bus the loop has become even more consistent. Playstyle History Since this deck actually takes some degree of skill and is not one you can just pick up and auto pilot. I will go over some of the general moves and combos you will see in a basic Wind-Up deck. Post Generation Force
Originally debuting, Wind-Ups, unlike most decks when they debut, actually had a legitimate core for that format. Magician was the backbone of the deck along with factory to generate advantage. Opening and setting magician first turn usually meant it would survive with its more than respectable 1800 defense. From there you would summon a wind-up from hand and trigger its effect, triggering magician special summoning any wind-up from your deck. More often than not most people choose to summon Wind-Up Soldier which allowed for instant access to Roach which was and still is extremely vital in duels against Agents and other top meta decks. However, if you chose to summon soldier, Xyzing with magician was not your only option. If the monster you summoned to trigger magician was Wind-Up Dog or another Soldier. Xyzing into a Rank 5 like Tiras was a VERY viable decision. With the amount of destruction cards increasing in the meta game. Tiras has a neat effect that prevented it from being destroyed. And decided to do away with the entire Wind-Up engine being factory and magician and decided to use only Soldier and Dog to constantly gain advantages through Rank 5 Summons. Another way to abuse Wind-Ups was the obvious Ultimate Offering deck which involved using face Ultimate Offering to repeatedly Normal Summon the Wind-Ups you gain through Wind-Up Factory and OTK. However, with the September 2011 Format coming in full force. Both of these decks couldn't hang with the meta and flopped.
Post Photon Shockwave
Photon Shockwave was a very interesting pack for Wind-Ups. During this pack we got the Gladiator beast treatment. Tons of useless cards that have no use then there was those 2-3 that actually help and that one that help everyone but us. The cards that matter that we were introduced to, Wind-Up Rabbit, Wind-Up Hunter, Wind-Up Kitten, And Wind-Up Knight. Wind-Up Knight was an interesting card. If allowed you to negate an attack to a wind-up monster. This actually made people think twice before attacking. They attack, you can negate and trigger factory and possibly even magician letting you explode. But the main ones that affected play style were Hunter, Kitten and Rabbit. More builds running Dog,hunter, and hamster with horn of the phantom beast started popping up. And its obvious why. Equip one of said monsters with horns allowing you to generate advantages through draws while you set up your Xyzs. One of the issues with this deck is, other decks do it better. Tech Genus and Flamvell both exceedingly out class this deck when it comes to horn use. A very interesting and the more commonly played deck is the Stun Variant. The stun variant relied on Jugglar to handle threats, knight to prevent attacks, and magician to recruit from deck and Soldier as a beater instead of Xyz material along with regular stun cards such as TKRO and D-Fissure. This deck did welll and even topped a National somewhere I can't remember lol.
Pre Order of Chaos
I am calling it now, March 2012 Format will be the Wind-Up format because Order of Chaos is giving them everything they needed to cut it as a top tier deck. We were introduced to a new friend named Wind-Up Zenmaighty. A Rank 3 XYZ which summons any Wind-Up from your deck or hand. Easily made with Tour guide or another new toy, Wind-Up Rat which is basically a highly upgraded version of Wind-Up Bat, instead of adding from graveyard to hand. Rat special summons from graveyard to field. And it is another beast to use with Super Nimble mega hamster. But then again who needs hamster now, because in ORSC we also obtained our own recruiter, Wind-Up Honey. As with just about every recruiter, when destroyed by battle it lets us summon any wind-up to the field. With all the new searching power, it is unneeded to protect and set up with magician since you can search it out and activate it with ease. With the addition of wind-up rat, it became apparent that wind-up could now use the Tech Genus engine which included T.G. Striker and T.G. Werewolf(see T.G. - Discussion for more info on them) along with Wind-Up Hunter to drain your opponents hand and remove just about any out they might have to answering your Tin Toys. The Stun variant of Wind-Ups also became more consistent being able to control the graveyard, hand and field better now. Zenmaighty is a boss monster wind-ups can be proud of(unlike that other sorry excuse for a monster named Zenmaister)
Decklist: Billy Brake, San Antonio Regionals
Monsters:20 3 Wind-Up Solider 3 Wind-Up Dog 3 Tour Guide From the Underworld 3 Reborn Tengu 3 Cyber Dragon 2 Maxx “C” 1 Sangan 1 Effect Veiler 1 Gorz, Emissary of Darkness Spells:10 2 Mystical Space Typhoon 2 Instant Fusion 1 Giant Trunade 1 Dark Hole 1 Monster Reborn 1 Mind Control 1 Pot of Avarice 1 Book of Moon Traps:10 2 Solemn Warning 2 Fiendish Chain 2 Safe Zone 2 Dust Tornado 1 Torrential Tribute 1 Call of The Haunted Extra Deck:15 2 Tiras, Keeper of Genesis 2 Adreus, Kepper of Armageddon 2 No.17 Leviathan Dragon 2 Number 39: Utpopia 1 Steel swarm Roach 1 Leviair, The Sea Dragon 1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon 1 Karbonala Warrior 1 Charubin The Fire Knight 1 Reaper on The Nightmare 1 Cyber Saurus Side Deck:15 3 Puppet Plant 2 D.D.
