UPDATED FEB 24 2015

itt we post fairly useful free apps to help you get on with your day

I will laugh at you if you reccomend shit (like AVG)

ANTIVIRUS:

Best Bet: Avira - Avira features the highest detection rates, and a solid real time scan

http://www.free-av.com/

Alternatives: Microsoft here is probably your best second choice with either Defender or Security Essentials depending on your windows version.

FIREWALL:

If you use Vista, 7, or 8 you dont really need more than the default. it works well. For XP users, this is discontinued but still the best non-nix firewall out there

SYGATE PERSONAL FIREWALL:

http://download.cnet.com/Sygate-Personal-F...4-10049526.html

TORRENTS:

BEST CHOICE:

qbtorrent features a similar UI and featureset to uTorrent with a lot less vendor bullshit, it has a Mac version as well though I haven't tried it

http://www.qbittorrent.org/

ALTERNATIVES

http://www.utorrent.com/ is the de facto standard still for most though added bloat and potential spyware ties hurt it for windows. Apparently the mac version is a touch less reliable.

OTHER CHOICE FOR NIX:

Bittornado invented a lot of random features. Im not linking it as if you're pro enough to compile it yourself you can google it

Transmission is most people's OS X go to, and I use it in FreeBSD without issue, however it is still banned on some private trackers for bad behaviour from old versions

IMING:

the general free do-any-chat client is pidgin

http://www.pidgin.im/

works for any OS pretty well. I use it for AIM and YIM. Its IRC interface could be a little bit better

TEXT EDITING:

this is mostly for coders, but if you cant use vi (or vim) you cant have leet points

http://www.vim.org/

If you desperately need a GUI, I'd reccomend Notepad++ for windows ( http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm )and for MAc I'd reccomend TextMate ( http://macromates.com/ ) if you want to pay, http://www.barebones.com/products/TextWrangler/ Textwrangler if you don't - you can even use TextMate modules with TextWrangler if you want. Smultron is good too but doesn't work with 10.6.

FTP:

If you know what it is, know that filezilla is best

http://filezilla-project.org/

If you want to feel really hardcore go to a command line (run>cmd) and just type ftp. Fun.

VIDEO:

While most suggest VLC it has a bit of odd behaviour so I instead recommend the Combined Community Codec Pack combined with Media Player Classic (bundled with it when you download CCCP)

NINITE:

Most of these apps can be downloaded in one package from ninite

https://ninite.com/

I only game in Windows, but I'll share some wisdom.

Dual boot Arch Linux and run Openbox. In Windows XP, disable the network card unless you're updating and/or gaming. Set ridiculous security measures on your router. Uninstall your anti-virus bullshit. Then, use the default firewall like a real man.

Windows Apps:

CCleaner | Deletes junk internet files, great uninstaller, basic registry cleaner.

VLC and/or Mplayer | Allows you to play most if not all media. There's also CCCP, but that's for weeaboo rookies.

Trillian | IM/IRC client. Pidgin is much more versatile, but I like Trillians cleaner UI.

Firefox | Until Chrome has extensions, I recommend Firefox. It doesn't really matter, just don't use IE.

Foxit | PDF viewer. Lighter and faster than Adobe's default.

7-Zip | Archiver. Just as good as Win-RAR. Just don't upload shit in 7z format. That shit is annoying.

Openoffice | Suitable MS Office substitute.

X-Chat | IRC client. Less annoying than mIRC.

Irfanview | It'll rename all of your saved nudes.

Essential Shit:

Puppy Linux Live CD | Even if you don't use Linux, you should have this.

8GB flash drive | One day, you'll wish you had one on your keychain.

winrar is o nly debatably free.

I actually prefer virtualclonedrive to daemon, as it doesnt try to trick you into installing spyware, and its doubleclick mounting is awesome.

True. But people need to learn. I'm thinking of writing a "Linux Primer".

CCCP is okay. For me, it liked to run multiple instances of itself when I tried to watch DVDs. It would eventually stall out, and I'd have to restart the process. That was back in October tho. If that was a bug, it's probably fixed by now.

Things I forgot:

Process Explorer | Awesome process/app manager.

RKtools | Cool easy-2-use command line programs for Windows.

Rivatuner | Overclock Nvidia graphics cards

OCCT/prime95 | Test the stability of your CPU overclock

Hmmm...so does it matter between Avira or Avast?

I've heard that Avira is a bit lighter on the RAM than Avast is

avast is a far more competent product.

I mean, Avira may be lighter on RAM, but Avast is only taking up 9mb of ram for me right now so..

Im going toi be updating a bit as this has grown outdated a bit - for example the best free antivirus is now unilaterally Avira, with the best detection, removal, and resource usage.

Does anyone have good free video editing software? I need something advance and fluent to work with for a video presentation soon in one of my classes. I've been trying to torrent Adobe Premiere Pro, but I cannot find reliable torrents. Any suggestions?

Try looking up the torrent of Sony Vegas by ChingLiu and afterwards NewBlueFx TotalFx by Ching Liu again. There's no free alternative to that, it's just too much money programs.

What do you think of Comodo Internet Security and qbittorrent and transmission-mac?

shitty, good with some UI quirks (it's my go to on all my windows systems), good but blocked on some private trackers (transmission-daemon is what i run in freebsd)

Transmission works better than qbittorrent on macs for some reason. qbittorrent is pretty darn good on Windows.

How's K-Lite codec pack mega for video watching?

Not sure if people here know about this, but if you need something simple to carry around on a flash drive to do simple troubleshooting and tech support. I highly reccomend Hiren's Boot CD. It comes with a ton of good shit (Password Recovery apps, XP lite, MBAM, Spybot Search and Destroy, Disk Imaging software, etc.) It's really fucking good and I use it constantly when I'm working on computers. Here's the link for it http://www.hirensbootcd.org/
