2 laptops I'm looking at (prices are in Australian dollars):

Asus 16" Notebook

• Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13ghz CPU

• DVD Supermulti

• Wireless + Bluetooth + HDMI

• Webcam

500 GB HDD

16" screen

4 GB RAM

Windows 7 Home Premium

$1494

Toshiba Satellite 16" Notebook

• Intel Core 2 Duo P8800

2.66ghz CPU

• DVDRW Supermulti

• Wireless 802.11 A/G/N

500 GB HDD

16" screen

4 GB RAM

Windows 7 Home Premium

$1784

Are either of these any good? Also, would they have HDMI ports? I want to be able to hook it up to my LCD TV etc.

why don't you put something useful like what type of gpu is included or if it it an integrated gpu. also the rpm on the hdd matters.

Laptops don't futureproof well in general, the Thinkpad W is as close as you can come to that

The intel has more ram (you wont notice) and a bigger hard drive, while the Lenovo has DDR3 (you wont notice), a better support system (hopefully you wont notice), is $50 less (you will notice) is a TOUCH lighter (you wont notice),

Basically the asus is better but it might not be $50 better. Decide whether you want the extra 70gb of hard disk space.

i do notice the $50, but it honestly isn't that big of an issue.

what about warranty-wise? which would be the better investment assuming something were to happen to the laptop

nvm you said Lenovo does when I re-read your post. I guess it really is up to looks and 70gb of HDD space!

asus warranty > lenovo warranty.

asus you get a free 2 year warranty and a free 1 year accidental damage warranty. customer support tho (aka, calling them with a problem), lenovo is a million times beter than asus. still, a monkey with a stick up its butt would probably be more useful than an asus rep...

Vaios are well built but they dont propose a very good value proposition (ie you can get the same thing for less and its less likely to burn a hole in your lap)

rei you are so right about that. let me tell you right now, this laptop is burning my junk. you know what though? i will gladly pay twice the price of a dell to not have a dell or w/e. i bought a $1500 xps and it lasted 3 months. what the fuck was that? gpu died. hdd died. faulty chipset. garbage. at least my overpriced vaios do the work.

thats why people buy german automobiles right? =]

You do realize the HD in a Vaio is likely the exact same HD as is in a Dell right?

Sounds like you fluked into a bad motherboard [as two of those three problems are mobo issues] anmd didn't fluke into a problem with your sony. One piece of anecdotal evidence doesn't make Sony the SUPARRELIABLEWINNAR especially when they don't have a very good track record for reliability (and, er, neither does VW or Mercedes).

this may seem off-topic, but mercedes build quality was at one time the benchmark for automobile building. it's just been lately that they've tried to unify parts among the product lines and cut costs which has earned them a bad reputation.

the HD point is true and maybe i am unlucky, but there are many things i don't like about other manufacturers. the keyboards are yucky on some models. the keys on my vaio are gorgeous. the build quality of the actual parts that make up the shell of the laptops are sometimes bad, and if they aren't they weigh a ton, ie my old xps. vaios are simple, attractive, and somewhat reliable. isn't that why people buy macs? i don't think it's because they're super-powered or affordable goodness.

don't get me wrong, i'm not mac-bashing. i am thinking about buying one for video editing, but i wouldn't dare get rid of my vaio.

unless google makes their own OS and their computers have insta-porn built into the software. YEAH

google already built three OSes, one is just a mod of ubuntu linux for internal use, one is Adroid used on cells and one is for netbooks which is still in developement (ChromeOS)

Macs are built really solid, given. The thing is -vaios don't have outstanding or in really any way notable build quality- while apple does.
