How to tell a clutch's condition on used cars

on FLAT ground, turn on the car's engine, depress the clutch, and shift to first gear while the clutch is down. VERY slowly release the clutch until the car begins moving.

The higher up you need to have the clutch move before the car moves is indicitive of wear on the clutch - which is effectively a spinning disk, which takes longer to engage the more it's worn down. If you need to lift the clutch almost to the point where your foot is off it for the car to move, the clutch is fucking GONE.
