MERMAIL/ATLANTEAN - DISCUSSION

Mermail/Atlantean (or simply, Mermail) is a deck composed of two archetypes, Mermails and Atlanteans.

Atlantean is an archetype of Water Sea Serpent-Type monsters introduced (as archetype) in Return of the Duelist and the Structure Deck: Realm of the Sea Emperor.

Mermail is an archetype of Water and Aqua, Fish and Sea Serpent-Type monsters introduced in Abyss Rising. They are mermaids (Mer) with armor (mail).

Atlanteans active their effects when they are sent to the graveyard to activate a Water monster's effect. Mermails are Water monsters who active their effects by discarding Water monsters.

In biology, this is known as Symbiosis, a close and often long-term interaction between two or more different biological species.THE MERMAILS

Lv7 - Water - Sea Serpent - 2400/1900
During your Main Phase: You can discard 2 WATER monsters, except this card; Special Summon this card from your hand. When this card is Special Summoned by this effect: Add 1 "Abyss" Spell or Trap Card from your Deck to your hand. You can Tribute 1 other face-up Attack Position WATER monster you control; this turn, this card can attack twice during the Battle Phase.
Most Mermails deck are created arround Abyssmegalo. Because of his effects (or more importantly, because of their cost: 2/3 Water monsters) Mermails decks tend to have high monster counts, since full orange hands can can obliterate Mermail's rage.

The first effect has 3 purposes, trigger 2 Atlantean's effects, summoning a 2400 ATK monster and searching an Abyss s/t.

There are 4 Abyss s/t: Abyssphere, Abysstrom, Abyssquall and Abysscale - Kraken.
* Abyssphere is really good and will be explained later.
* Abysscale - Kraken is an okey tech and will be explained later.
* Abysstrom are Abyssquall shit.

The second effect has 2 purposes, been able to trigger an Atlantean's effect and been able to drop 4800 damage on the board.

Lv4 - Water - Fish - 1600/800
When this card is Normal or Special Summoned: You can discard 1 WATER monster; add 1 Level 3 WATER monster from your Deck to your hand. The effect of "Mermail - Abysspike" can only be activated once per turn.
Abysspike can do both, trigger an Atlantean's effect and can search for any Lv3 Water, (Atleantean Marksman, Genex Undine, Mermail Abysslinde or the suboptimal Mermail Abyssgunde). Overall is a very simple card with an amazing effect.

Lv3 - Water - Aqua - 1500/1200
If this card on the field is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 "Mermail" monster from your Deck, except "Mermail - Abysslinde". The effect of "Mermail - Abysslinde" can only be activated once per turn.
Abysslinde can bring either Abysspike (inmediatelly triggering his effect) or Abyssmegalo giving stability to the deck. However, while people may believe tutors are slow for this format and you cant wait until your opponent decides to attack you, she should still be ran because of Abyssphere (the combo will be explained later tho).

If this card is discarded: You can Special Summon 1 "Mermail" monster from your Graveyard, except "Mermail - Abyssgunde". The effect of "Mermail - Abyssgunde" can only be activated once per turn.
Abyssgunde is a suboptimal tech. You can run 1 if you really want to. She can enable combos during late game but requires a lot to offer a lot, you need a Mermail in the grave, she in the hand, some way to discard her and some way to abuse the monster in grave.

He is the graveyard version of Abysspike. Like Abyssgunde, he is a suboptimal choice. By the time you run out of targets from your deck with Abysspike you should have already won.

All Level 3 or lower Sea Serpent-Type monsters you control can attack your opponent directly. When this card is sent to the Graveyard for the activation of a WATER monster's effect: Add 1 Sea Serpent-Type monster from your Deck to your hand, except "Atlantean Dragoons".
Dragoons is the enabler. He has a solid 1800 ATK with a nice effect that works wonder if you somehow can summon him and Marksman at the same time.

However, the reason you max this card is because when he is discarded you can search for ANY Sea Serpent, and by ANY I mean Abyssmegalo, Marksman, Heavy Infantry, Deep Sea Diver and Moulinglacia.

Atlantean Marksman
Lv3 - Water - Sea Serpent - 1400/0
When this card inflicts Battle Damage to your opponent: You can Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower Sea Serpent-Type "Atlantean" monster, except "Atlantean Marksman", from your Deck. When this card is sent to the Graveyard for the activation of a WATER monster's effect: Target 1 Set card your opponent controls; destroy that target.
Marksman has two amazing effects. On one side he can summon any Atlantean except himself when he inflicts damage. This means he can inflict up to 3600 damage by himself. He also provides access for fast and costless XYZs and Synchros.

On the other side he is one side of the Marksman/Heavy Infantry combo for destruction. Their effects combined lets you destroy any sort of resistance. You get the Mermail's effect out of the discard and then the Atlantean's effect out of the same thing, netting you a +1 and a lot of field control.

Atlantean Heavy Infantry
Lv2 - Water - Sea Serpent - 0/1600
While this card is face-up on the field, once per turn during your Main Phase, you can Normal Summon a Level 4 or lower Sea Serpent-Type monster in addition to your Normal Summon or Set. (You can only gain this effect once per turn.) When this card is sent to the Graveyard for the activation of a WATER monster's effect: Target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; destroy that target.
Heavy Infantry is the other side of the Marksman/Heavy Infantry coverage. While Marksman takes care of the face down cards, Heavy Infantry takes care of the face up cards.

His effect (an double summon for a Sea Serpent) is usually useless unless comboed with Genex Ally Birdman (in which case he can enable an OTK). So, unless you run Birdman, his main effect would be his destruction effect.

This card gains 800 ATK while you control a face-up Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua-Type monster other than this card.

A suboptimal tech. He is run in order to give Marksman access to 1 card Lv3 XYZ aswell as the 3600 damage get. Drawing into him is a bitch tho, since he does nothing besides that.

Diva is a thematic TGU. She can bring another Diva, Marksman or Heavy Infantry out. She gives you access to Synchros aswell as big plays. She can be searched by Abysspike and Dragoons.

Lv8 - Water - Sea Serpent - 2800/2200
Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by having exactly 5 WATER monsters in your Graveyard, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. When this card is Special Summoned: You can discard 2 random cards from your opponent's hand. The effect of "Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord" can only be activated once per turn. If this card leaves the field, skip the Battle Phase of your next turn.
Hold your orgasm, duelist. He is a thematic DAD, solid 2800 ATK and ridiculous effect. Sadly, Mermails and Atlanteans dont have much graveyard control. He can be recruited via Dragoons whenever you need him so run 0-1 in standar versions, run 3 in dedicated versions.
The Holy Trinity. While playing Undine is not mandatory for Mermails, the Undine variant is the most common one.

Undine can send ANY Water from the deck to the graveyard as cost, and in return you get a Controller. He is Abysspike on steroids (since Undine doesnt need the said Atlantean in the hand in order to launch the combo).

The main use of Controller is Allure. Since Undince can be searched by Abysspike, it's really easy to summon Undine, who gives you Controller for free, so you are pretty much playing with a Pot of Greed in your deck.

Also, Controller + Dragoons or Abysspike gives you access to Gungnir, who can trigger up to 2 Atlanteans from your hand, destroying up to 2 cards in the process.

When your opponent Special Summons a monster, you can discard 1 card to Special Summon this card from your hand or Graveyard. There can only be 1 face-up "Dragon Ice" monster on the field.
Dragon Ice is a nice anti-meta tech. It lets you discard himself or another card when they Special Summon something. This means that, if they try to OTK you, just discard Heavy Infantry and fuck them up.

Birdman gives you acess to OTK by using Deep Sea Diva and Atlantean Heavy Infantry. I will explain the combo later. The Birdman variant is quite unpopular in OCG but has a lot of love from TCG players. The combo is:

Normal summon Deep Sea Diva, special summon Heavy Infantry
Return Deep Sea Diva, special summon Birdman
Extra normal summon Deep Sea Diva, summon Marksman

Then you can go:
* Daigusto Phoenix + Birdman + Marskman + Attack Squad (8000 dmg)
* Daigusto Phoenix + Birdman + Marskman + Dragoons (7800 dmg)
* Daigusto Phoenix + Leviathan (triggers Marksman effect and 5500 dmg)
* Daigusto Phoenix + Orient Dragon (remove Synchro and 6100 dmg)
* T.G. Hyper Librarian + Catastor (draw 1)
Salvage is mandatory in any Mermail deck since it lets you take back half of your deck. Abysslince, Marksman and Heavy Infantry, Deep Sea Diver and Undine. Is an amazing card for mid to late game, specially in combination with Abyssmegalo.

When this card leaves the field, destroy that monster. Destroy this card during your opponent's next End Phase after activation.
Abyssphere is one of the best cards in the deck. First, it can be searched by Abyssmegalo, so you discard 2 Atleanteans, trigger them both and search Abyssmegalo for more pluses.

Abyssphere can summon 3 cards:
* Abyssmegalo: He would become a 2400 beater.
* Abysspike: If you run out of Abysslinde or if you want to destroy something inmediatelly (and, obviouslly, hold a Marksman/Heavy Infantry) you can summon him and trigger his effect, discarding an Atlantean to trigger the Atlantean's effect. While Abyssphere will negate Abysspike effect, he can still activate it.
* Abysslinde: The main target. You can chain Abyssphere to any destruction and it will summon Abysslinde, who will be destroyed and will trigger her effect. You can also activate this when your opponent tries to enter in his End Phase, so Abyssphere will destroy the Abysslinde in the same turn, triggering her effect.

It doesnt destroy itself when the monster leaves the field, so you can summon Dewloren and recyle it.

Note: If you activate this during the opponent's end phase, you will have to wait until the next end phase for the self-destruction effect.
Note 2: It has a negative effect (spells cant be activated) so be awear of that.

Equip only to a "Mermail" monster. It gains 400 ATK. Negate any monster effect that activates on your opponent's side of the field, and if you do, send this card to the Graveyard.
Abysscale - Kraken is a nice tech. You should only considere it for when you run 3 Abyssmegalo and should not run more than 1.

It has two major restrictions: First, is mandatory, like DCK, so your opponent can play arround it. Second, it only negate effects that are activated on the field, like Bounzer.

Most OCG builds dont run it at all. If you really wanna screem "RELEASE THE KRAKEN", then run 1.

Most Mermail decks play plays between 0 to 2 hand traps. Gorz and Trago are often seen in Undine variants while Maxx C is seen in non-undine variants. Dragon Ice can be considered a hand trap aswell.
From all the staples, Torrential is the one with an honorific mention. It has an amazing synergy with Mermail Abysslide and Atlantean Marksman.

However, unlike most current competitive decks, Mermail rarely play high trap counts. They usually have a 23/25 - 6/8 - 8/9 ratio or something arround those numbers. With 3 Abyssphere and 2 Torrential been staple most players chooses between 2 Mirror Force 2 Bottomless or 2 Warning and 1 Judgment.

Synchro Controller and Undine for Dewloren
Bounce both Divas, +1000 ATK
Summon Diva (-500), search Marksman
Synchro Diva and Marksman for Gishlnodon
Summon Diva (-500), search Marksman
Synchro Diva and Gishlnodon for Gungir

Afaik, Bahmaut Shark wont be released anytime soon. However, he is quite used in OCG since it has one of thoses cool combos this deck can generates. The combo is:

End Phase Abyssphere into summon Abysslide
Destroy Abyssphere, destroy Abysslide
Summon Abysspike, discard Marksman/Heavy Infantry (optional), search Deep Sea Diva
Summon Deep Sea Diva, summon Marksman
Attack with Marskman, summon Dragoons
Attack with everything
Synchro with Diva and Marksman for Catastor
XYZ into Shark
Detach Dragoons, summon Aeroshark (Leviathan cant attack direct with no materials)
Trigger Dragoons, search for whatever you want (Moulinglacia would be the ideal one since thats 4 Water in the GY, so with a single more Water you can summon him).

Needed when playing Ultimate Offering.
Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice BarrierGungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier

Staple cards. Alows shaningans with Controller, Birdman or Deep Sea Diva. Dweloren can recyle dead Divas or Abyssphere while Gungnir can clear the opponent field while triggering Atlantean's effects.
Black Rose DragonScrap DragonStardust DragonWind-Up Zenmaines

Standar Stuff.
Number 17: Leviathan Dragon

While he is considered standar stuff, it is important to remember than Leviathan's effect will trigger Marksman.
Number 11: Big Eye

Another option besides Abyssgaios in case you summon 2 Abyssmegalo.

good post.

pre-mermail since we just got the structure deck, ive been messing with this

3 Atlantean Heavy Infantry
3 Atlantean Marksman
3 Deep Sea Diva
2 Atlantean Attack Squad
2 Thunder King Rai-oh
2 Abyss Soldier
1 Atlantean Dragoons
1 Gorz, Emissary of Darkness
-17

2 Mystical Space Typhoon
2 Pot of Duality
2 Salvage
1 Heavy Storm
1 Dark Hole
1 Monster Reborn
1 Pot of Avarice
1 Book of Moon
1 Call of the Atlanteans
-12

2 Solemn Warning
2 Mirror Force
2 Dimensional Prison
2 Compulsory Evacuation Device
2 Torrential Tribute
1 Solemn Judgment
-11

______________

1 Ally of Justice Catastor
1 Gaia Knight, Force of the Earth
1 Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Scrap Dragon
1 Stardust Dragon
1 T.G. Hyper Librarian
1 Mist Wurm
1 Black Rose Dragon
1 Daigusto Phoenix
1 Gachi Gachi Gatentsu
1 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
1 Leviair The Sea Dragon
1 Wind-Up Zenmaines
1 Number 30: Acid Golem of Destruction
1 Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon

it runs kind of like agents. it's treated me well so far.

i didnt like the birdman / undine route because i needed to make 5-6 spaces for the undines / controllers and while birdman is neat, after testing for 2 weeks now ive found it to be cute and all, but i like this approach more.

i dont like dragoons right now either since every time i draw it its just a beatstick (when mermails come out, i am going to max it without hesitation tho lol).

dragon ice / all that other gimmick stuff i didnt like too much either. abyss soldier is the only discard outlet that i felt did anything to the meta.

Great post.

For the Undine+Offering Combo, you can bring out a Second Diva with Diva's Effect Instead.
Your Field: Undine, Diva, Diva.
Pay 500 to summon Controller.
Synch Undine and Controller for Dewloren, bounce both Divas.
Pay 500, summon Diva, pull a Level 3 with its effects. Synch for Librarian.
From here you can choose what you want to make with your second diva. Plus, Dewloren is at 3000.

Pre-abyr, Undine is still a bad ass and there are diva plays that are strong. But, largely, I agree. I think it's the Mermails that form the deck's core.

Still, I bet they will see a good amount of play in the early rounds at providence. They won't go father then that though.

Updated OP. Ultimate Offering + Undine is OTK. I didnt realized this because NONE of the OCG versions I saw (+20) plays Gishlnodon.

Summon Undine, Drop Dragoons, Search Controller, Search Diva
Summon Diva (-500), search Diva
Summon Controller (-500)
Synchro Controller and Undine for Dewloren
Bounce both Divas, +1000 ATK
Summon Diva (-500), search Marksman
Synchro Diva and Marksman for Gishlnodon
Summon Diva (-500), search Marksman
Synchro Diva and Gishlnodon for Gungir
Clear field with Gungir
Attack with Marksman, summon Dragoons
1400 1800 + 2500 + 3000 = 8700

Also, Atlanteans can be played without Mermails but they are not near as competitive. You will need to relay on Birdman for OTK, Undine for control and Dragon Ice. The problem is you wont have any way (past Dragon Ice or Abss Soldier) to discard in hand Atlanteans to pay for Water monsters effects.

In my rough tests I was using Abyss Soldier and Call of the atlanteans, but in those sample decklists I see neither, these cards seem so good in theory, why are they not being run?

You can more simply OTK by using the 2 Divas to go into any level 5 and then make Phoenix with Diva and Heavy Infantry, although Gungnir is more effective if they have more than 1 card on the field.

Great OP but I would not call Abyssgunde and Abyssturge sub optimal at all, since more than a few people have gripes with having to dedicate 6-7 spots to the Undine/Controller engine (I draw Controller with no Allure/Ultimate Offering like it's my day job).

Abyssturge lets you get back Diva and all your ammo, and Abyssgunde lets you wombo combo and sets up neat Rank 4 plays.

Cutting those 6-7 cards gives you room for that 1:1 ratio of those monsters + better cards like MST, the ability to play more traps, and tech like Maxx "C".

Also, I think the cards from Cosmo Blazer should be added soon, the support in there is ridiculous. :S

Decklist:
Monsters (24)
3x Atlantean Heavy Infantry
3x Atlantean Marksman
2x Atlantean Dragoons
1x Atlantean Attack Squad
1x Elemental Hero Stratos
3x Elemental Hero Ice Edge
3x Deep Sea Diva
3x Genex Undine
2x Genex Controller
2x Effect Veiler
1x Gorz the Emissary of Darkness

Spells (14)
2x Miracle Fusion
2x Mystical Space Typhoon
2x Pot of Duality
2x Salvage
2x E - Emergency Call
1x Reinforcement of the Army
1x Monster Reborn
1x Heavy Storm
1x Dark Hole

Traps (2)
2x Spiritual Water Art - Aoi

This is a new concept i thought of while i was searching for Hero cards. I saw Ice Edge, and immediately thought of Atlanteans.
Ice Edge discards your atlanteans, you get their effect and you still get the +1 of destroying the S/T.
That's not a side deck. It's just some ideas i have that i could incorporate in the deck. Super Poly is a good card, specially when you have those controllers you got from undine. Decrees may be good, but i think not at the moment. I dont think that the 3rd mst is also needed for now.
I wanna test Tragoedias instead of veilers and play allure, since now the deck has 5 darks, 2 of them controllers you easily search.

This deck is MONTHS old but this is what I was using for awhile. It worked pretty good and is more control based than OTK.

Did anyone test Morray of Greed? In my test's the card seems so good, it gets those nasty Atlanteans from your hand and gives you more chances to grab key cards our protection.

After talking about the deck with Dawgy, I honestly believe that running triple Compulsory Evacuation Device and Call of the Haunted should be a standard in this deck. I'd like to get a bit of input with the current build that I'm playing.

I'm playing it in my pre-Abyss Rising build and I'm liking it more than I did Duality, but I keep running into problems where i just draw Genex Controllers. :\

Oh, my bad. I dont think you can relay on your Atlanteans been discard'd by Gungir as he requres a lot to work (and something like Thunder Dragon would work way better).

Thoses are are good for the Atlanteans deck. This is the Mermail/Atlantean Discussion. They are terrible in a Mermail/Atlantean deck.

I strongly suggest you to add Allure. Also 3 Dragoons are sick. You should cut 2 out of either 3rd Spike, Dark Hole or Gorz.

No, use Undine to send Dragoons from deck to the graveyard, that will trigger Dragoons's effect.

Gunde and Turge are shit imo. They requiere you to have plenty cards in your graveyard to work. I have only seen 1 OCG version with 1 of each and I have never seen an OCG version with more than 1 of either.

Undine is SICK without Allure of Offering. You dont need Allure or Offering AT ALL in order to go nuts with Undine.

Some people dont run him tho, but the majority does, so feel free to choose between running or not running, but dont say he is ineffective because he is one of the most consistent cards in the deck.

Cosmo Blazer wasnt even fully confirmed afaik and we wont see any of that until the next banlist so is quite pointless to discuss that now.
