ChaosHunterSTOR-EN-ScR-1E.png

Most of you will have probably heard about this card, especially those of you that have been keeping up to date with the goings on in OCG. Chaos Hunter has been cropping up in Side Decks since the release of Tachyon and although we've discussed it in respects to other cards within other threads I think that it merits its own discussion.

Pros  :DD :

  • Its effect has a lot of merit given what comes out in Tachyon. Stopping removal hurts Incarnate Dragons, who lose out to Gold Sarcophagus, Seven Star Sword, Eclipse Wyvern and their own inherent Special Summoning abilities via banishing. Blaster is an out, along with Debris Dragon potentially depending on their graveyard setup, but overall there are less outs to this than other counters because this stops their ability to search (so for example, while there are technically less outs to something like Vanity's Fiend you still have a plethora of ways to get into Blaster, who can clear it).
  • Stopping removing from play also has uses in the Prophecy match-up, where you block Priestess and Justice from using their effects and also stop Spellbook of Fate, and in the Verz match-up, where you block Rabbit and Kerykeion.
  • There are positives to the timing of its summoning, as you can interrupt them whilst they're making a play. This is relevant against Incarnate, where if they use the effect of a baby dragon to bring out Redux/Tempest you can drop this and potentially force them to end their play there and then.
  • It is Level 7, so it has great synergy with any deck that can produce Rank 7s, for example in the Incarnate mirror if you're going second (and the mirror is very die-roll oriented due to the nature of first turn LaDD) you can drop this to interrupt their play, then during your turn you can pitch a baby to fetch a Dragon, overlay into Drago/Eye and be able to banish for whatever plays you want to make.
  • It's an Eradicator Epidemic Virus target, so that also gives it merit against Prophecy.
  • On a lesser note Prophecy and Incarnate do not play defensive Traps (and Hunter turns off Fate), so they aren't exactly going to be clearing this very easily
  • 2500 is a pretty good stat
  • Dodges Bottomless and Dimensional Prison
  • =-| (I guess if you play Dark World it's a Fiend, and in Frog Monarchs you can always just Normal Summon it)

Cons  :( :

  • The timing of its summoning can be a pain.
  • It doesn't do that much against Prophecy nor Verz, as Prophecy can continue to just gain tremendous plus off Judgement and can simply run over it with Priestess + Power (and obviously they have Wisdom to protect it from any backrow hate), while Verz can run over it with Ophion, whom they can summon independently of Rabbit or Kerykeion, and they have Mirror Force/Torrential(and potentially Dress on Thunderbird that has bounced/Heliotrope or Lance on Castor and aforementioned) to clear it anyway.
  • The usual fact that it's a poor topdeck later on into the game and only really has uses in certain scenarios at the start of the game.
  • You can argue that something like Vanity's Fiend or Kristya has a better effect, as that stops Special Summoning entirely. Also a substitute like Imperial Iron Wall could be considered.
  • The fact that it reveals in hand makes it vulnerable to Mind Crush and can give them a draw off Maxx.
  • The fact that it's level can make it a hindrance in the mirror due to Big Eye

So what are your thoughts on this?

One thing you should note is that if Blaster/Tidal is brought out by Burner/Stream, they can't attack on that turn.

It's pretty good. Better than most but the dragon deck is still too crazy op that it makes this card still feel like a crappy defense vs the deck. Like if they just play a bit smarter then they can play around this. If they end up killing it and follow up with ladd then your definitely finished since ladd is out and your down 2 cards (hunter +discard)

The problem with this card is it's not enough.

Elemental Dragons are too strong, and even though OCG people side this AND Imperial Iron Wall, ED still dominate.

Konami is enjoying it as they're getting ready for this

its a good EEV target but yea its not enough as they can breakthrough skill it then steal it with big eye.

Completely slipped my mind, added that to OP, thanks :) .

True, I agree that this card is not enough. But is there anything that can truly combat the deck or can we only side almost cards in an attempt to try and combat them?

You can only attempt.

For the best shot at stopping their advance out right, you'd have to go first and then drop Gozen Match on them or something while having somethng that eats up all their attacks. And even then you'd be fucked by Gaio or Dragossack on a bad day.
