I haven't heard anything that touches Donald Fagen's Sunken Condos, but I also don't listen to a ton of contemporary music. Still, musically that mother fucker is as inventive as ever and has a ridiculously versatile group of musicians with him. Miss Marlene. It was the end of 2012 when it came out, but that might as well be 2013 - still grammy season.

Why not listen to some more contemporary music?

Everything I hear that is contemporary usually falls into a few 'boxes.'

Done before, but better.

Bad, says nothing, is not musically interesting in the slightest (to me).

Soul-less (to me).

I do try to listen to some in order to see what's out there and what's being written.

Well, what's some of the 'notable' contemporary stuff you've listened to recently? Even stuff which was supposed to be good but ended up boxed, as you say.

Loved Born to Sing by Van Morrison, though some songs are slow and don't go anywhere for me - Goin' Down to Monte Carlo and If In Money We Trust are lovely.

A lot of the other contemporary stuff I've heard (outside of a few jazz recordings) I could not share. They were unforgettable, and as such, I don't remember. There are a few pop artists of all things that have stood out to me. Adele, yes, but I find myself liking some of Sara Bereilles. I think she could be a sort of Laura Nyro figure for pop music. If I like something (and I like a lot), I go through great pains to learn about the artist and what I'm hearing. And I don't care if the group's name is Stinky Fart, if the music is there, I will listen. I do like some of what Snarky Puppy and Hiromi are doing. If it doesn't capture you in some way immediately or tries to break some new musical or harmonic ground, why not listen to something else instead?

I mean... this is something. There is something inherently there. That organ solo?

While there are a literal ton of artists churning out derivative tune after derivative tune (as there always is, in every generation), contemporary music is quite experimental. I agree with you entirely on not listening to something if it fails to capture you immediately or tries to break new ground, as there is simply way too much music out there, including both the old, and the plethora of music that is constantly getting released.

If I had someone to lead me to contemporary artists who were putting out some quality stuff, i would not hesitate to listen. I simply don't have the time to investigate everything. As a composer myself, I'm too enraptured by Becker/Fagen, Wayne Shorter, Charles Mingus, Carole King, Lennon/McCartney, Rodgers/Hart, Bacharach/David, etc. I'm trying to hit that kind of a bar and I just don't hear it anymore. That's not to say it doesn't exist.

are you asian?

No.

do you like music that's not japanese (besides the token Danes)? Lol.

Yeah! There's non Japanese music in the list I made. Most of the albums I posted from Japanese artists are sang entirely in English as well.

ZZZ's is a Japanese band but Magnetica was produced NYC I believe (basically I discovered the group)

The non Japanese albums on that list is besides the ones you mentioned are

Meishi Smile - Mysterious Summer Vacation

Spazz Kid - Desire

And the only one's with the language barrier is Soutaiseiriron - Town Age and Her Ghost Friend. I haven't heard of the two works you called out though prior to this conversation.
