Best Albums of 2013 (So Far)

Recommended Posts

Chvrches has strong points, i.e. The Mother We Share, Night Sky, and Science/Visions, but the album drags a lot. It doesn't just fall off in the latter half, instead it spreads out it's failures over the course of the album, making it this long trek just to get to another good song.

I really enjoyed Rashad's record, for the record.

yeah Chvrches definitely have high points, they're far from a terrible band - their debut just lets them down in terms of consistency. perhaps they'll grow into a stronger band in the future, when they gain more experience and confidence.

anyone hear Special Request - Soul Music? pretty fucking solid. not really a cohesive album as much as a collection of solid tracks, but you can't fault it for that. every track will be dropped by any big DJ playing tunes between 150-170 BPM, for sure.

Already heard 2 songs from Son Lux and I already love it. gonna get Lanterns now.

I dont get the big deal about Sky Ferreira, kinda bland.

Chvrches, not feeling them at all, maybe I have a problem with the 'childish' vocals. The overall sound doesn't do anything for me either, sounds too 'safe'.

giel whats ur fav albums/tracks this year

giel is over music now

kinda sad that this happens but ya i dont have time 2 keep up with the content farms so i kinda just end up listening to rap and i am virtually disconnected from the indiesphere (i havent even listened to the new arcade fires :-(!)

chief keef - almighty so

dj rashad - double cup

darkside - psychic

music at this point isnt really a release to release-to-release thing to me anymore, much more sonic trend-based.

the point is not what you were saying, more how worthless a post it was. the posts you were responding to were worthless, too. basically just post about music in this thread, no need for all the weird trying to be funny by calling people out shit that DG seems to be plagued by.

then do you fathom the irony in you doing exactly the same thing?

ftr i am not trying to be funny; i'm just making an observation about the shitty nature of some behavior that happens on this forum. i don't really do it to elicit a reaction from you or anybody else, and certainly not "to be funny"...

.... come on dude....

List of the albums that I've enjoyed most this year. I'm sure most of you are aware of a lot of these but I thought I'd list everything anyway. Still have another 40 or 50 that I need to work through so this is far from complete. Will try to list genres too although I don't really know much at all about electronic genres so I'll just list anything electronic-y as electronic hehe

Streetlight Manifesto - The Hands That Thieve (3W ska)

Darkside - Psychic (Nico Jaar electronic)

The Haxan Cloak - Excavation (really scary dark ambient)

Tim Hecker - Virgins (ambiento)

Melt-Banana - Fetch (batshit noise rock, honestly the most fun thing i've listened to in a while and i recommend it to everyone. very accessible and only 33 minutes!)

Jon Hopkins - Immunity (electronic)

Ulver & The Tromsø Chamber Orchestra - Messe I.X-VI.X (modern classical)

Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus 7 (ambient)
Kayo Dot - Hubardo (avant-metal, Toby Driver!!!!!)
The Reign of Kindo - Play With Fire (jazz rock shit that pretty much anyone could dig, I really like these guys. Check out "Just Wait" on yt and you should be sold)
Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels (hip hop this year has been pretty disappointing, only a few really dope releases; this is probs my favorite)
Sigur Ros - Kveikur (post-rock)
Gorguts - Colored Sands (Tech Death)
Fuck Buttons - Slow Focus (electronic)
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest (electronic)
Ludovico Einaudi - In a Time Lapse (modern classical)
The National - Trouble Will Find Me (goat band, indie)
Laura Stevenson & The Cans - Wheel (goat female, indie)
The Psyke Project - Guillotine (dark crusty hardcore)
Agrimonia - Rites of Separation (crust punk/dark hardcore/post-metal/black metal basically a hodgepodge of everything heavy)
Geskia! - Silent of Light (electronic)
Ceephax - Cro Magnox (electronic)
Autechre - Exai (electronic)
The Field - Cupid's Head (electronic)
Forest Swords - Engravings ("Neo-Psychedelia")
The Knife - Shaking the Habitual (electronic, haven't actually ever listened to the whole thing but my intermittent listening has been good to me)
Justin Timberlake - The 20/20 Experience Pt. I (pop)
Janelle Monae - The Electric Lady (pop)
James Blake - Overgrown (like post-dubstep or whatever people are calling it, art poppy tho)
Deafheaven - Sun Bat Her (colorful blackgaze)
Wardruna - Runaljod - Yggdrasil (dark folk, think black metal band makes a folk music album)
Pusha T - My Name Is My Name (hippity hoppity)
Danny Brown - Old (hippity hoppity)
7 G.E.M.S. - Golden Era Music Sciences (hip hop, tragedy khadafi, if you're a fan of jedi mind tricks and their ilk, you'll dig this a lot)
The Doppelgangaz - Hark (gritty east coast hip hop, super dope)
R.A. the Rugged Man - Legends Never Die (hip hop, "I thought I was the illest..." - Notorious B.I.G. when asked about Rugged Man THAT"S A REAL QUOTE)
Ghostface Killah - 12 Reasons to Die (concept album that wears off kind of quick)
Friendzone - DX (nostalgic instrumental cloud rap shit, probably nafetheninja would really like this)
Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap (really fun and nostalgic high school hip hop)
Freddie Gibbs - ESGN (midwest gangsta dude, hip hop)
Killah Priest - The Psychic World of Walter Reed (hip hop, very good but something ridiculous possessed this fuckin guy to make a 40 song double album so it's really hard to listen to)
Prodigy & Alchemist - Albert Einstein (hip hop, who knew P could still make a good album)
Thriftworks - Terry-D (electronic, kind of hip-hoppy at times)
The World Is A Beautiful Place... - Whenever, If Ever (emo)
Have Mercy - The Earth Pushed Back (emo)
Queens of the Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork (qotsa, alt rock, stoner rock idk)
Haken - The Mountain (prog)
The Dillinger Escape Plan - One of Us is the Killer (metalcore)
Integrity - Suicide Black Snake (metalcore)
Shai Hulud - Reach Beyond the Sun (hardcore/metalcore, kind of overrated but still pretty great)
Nails - Abandon All Life (10 minutes of getting your face kicked in)
Weekend Nachos - Still (powerviolence, mad heavy hardcore)
Counterparts - The Difference Between Hell and Home (melodic hardcore)
Kvelertak - Meir ([black]core that is now pretty much just hardcore tons of funnnn)
Touche Amore - Is Survived By (hardcore, great band, pretty good album)
A Wilhelm Scream - Partycrasher (really melodic and technical punk, pretty fun album)
Immolation - Kingdom of Conspiracy (god tier death metal band who's still got it)
Listener - Time Is a Machine (Indie similar to mewithoutYou)
Kurt Vile - Wakin' on a Pretty Daze (folky shit, guitarist for The War On Drugs)
My Bloody Valentine - m b v (mbvvvv, shoegaze)
Arcade Fire - Reflektor (indie)
Buke & Gase - General Dome (indie, weird instruments called the buke and the gase, lol. They're pretty neat)
HRVRD - From the Bird's Cage (post-hardcore turned indie band)
Lydia - Devil (fun indie)
Shugo Tokumaru - In Focus? (japanese fun indie pop)
Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock & Jack DeJohnette - Somewhere (jazz, one of the best jazz groups ever)
Wayne Shorter Quartet - Without a Net (free jazzy, almost third stream)
Tomasz Stanko - Wislawa (free jazz)
Typhoon - White Lighter (indie)
Barrow - Though I'm Alone (brooding screamo)
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol 3: To See More Light (weird, experimental jazz)
Jizue - Journal (very jazzy post-rock)
Midas Fall - Wilderness (draining post-rock)
These New Puritans - Field of Reeds (post-rock)
Frank Turner - Tape Deck Heart (folk punk)
Olan Mill - Hiraeth (ambient)
Comadre - Comadre (screamo)

Russian Circles - Memorial (post-rock, heavy ish tho, some elements of post-metal)

Radical Face - The Family Tree: The Branches (really slept on indie folk shit, also a concept album)

Sorry it's so messy, but yeah these are all at least 7/10s and I'd recommend them to anyone. Like I said I still have a bunch of music to listen to and recs are welcome if anyone has any. Check some of this stuff out if it looks good to youuu

artpop has a few absolute beasts but is on the whole pretty bland. the stuff she's doing outside of her music is 100x more interesting than her music.
