10000th Post 100 Reasons Why Your Game is Awful

As promised, in detail, why Magic is such a great game and Yugioh sucks. One reason for every 100 posts. If you disagree with any of these, you’re wrong. Enjoy.

 

1. No real prize support: I shouldn’t even need to elaborate. ARG has made some advances on this front, but it’s still not close.

2. Magic has more levels of play: There is a huge difference in player quality between in FNM, PTQ, GP, and PT. Yugioh just has larger locals.

3. Magic has actual pre-releases: Yugioh has buy your 5 packs at retail and get the fuck out.

4. Magic Online is a thing: Anything you use to play Yugioh on the internet is awful in comparison.

5. Magic has strategy articles: Yugioh has walls of meaningless text with someone’s name that you may recognize at the bottom.

6. Yugioh’s PSCT sucks: By this I mean it’s completely user unfriendly. I can understand it because I’m a programmer and I’m used to colons and semicolons determining what the fuck something means. But the average Yugioh player still doesn’t get it. With a Magic card you can just pick it up and read it. Reading cards shouldn’t feel like you’re speaking another language.

7. Konami holds stores hostage: “Do exactly as we say or we’ll take away your ability to get special packs, host regionals, host sneak peeks, vend at events, etc.”

8. Yugioh is regionalized: North America, Europe, and Japan have completely different cards and rules. In Magic everything is worldwide.

9. Yugioh’s judge program doesn’t have levels: And people wonder why we still encounter awful judges at the highest levels of play. Not only does Magic have levels, but the tests to become a judge are actually pretty fucking difficult. My FNM judge knows more about Magic than your YCS judge knows about Yugioh.

10. The judge rewards also suck dick: Yugioh figured out that they can just replace real prize support with promo cards, so why can’t they do the same thing for judges? Magic actually makes it worth your while to judge. Oh, and they also completely pay for your trip if you have to travel.

11. Yugioh doesn’t have any prestigious invitation-only type events: Nationals actually used to be difficult to quality for, but that’s no longer the case. Worlds is basically a locals that is a crapshoot to quality for.

12. Regionals blow tons of dick: No real prizes, no top cut, and invites go down to top32 or whatever. Why the fuck does anyone go to these again?

13. Your top cut is awful: The words “top32” should not be any where near this shitty game. Have more swiss and less single elim. Quit being a bitch. Even worse is “top64.” God fucking damn it.

14. Konami uses a “pump and dump” scheme that is immoral as fuck: Aka broken secret rares followed by reprints. You all are a bunch of tools in Konami’s eyes.

15. No real limited play: And any attempts to do so are typical met with a massive backlash by the player base. You are all giant faggots.

16. Magic has awesome lingo: Otherwise known as the reason why Magic must be the actual literal stone cold fucking nuts and why Yugioh is the big shit pits, not close.

17. Magic has less theft: Completely unrelated, Magic also has less black people.

18. Posting a picture of you smoking weed with an alligator gets you 5 years, cheating gets you 1-2 years: When I tell this to Magic players they refuse to even believe me.

19. Yugioh doesn’t use the metric system: Whoops, for a sec I thought we were comparing the US and Canada.

20. Yugioh only has one format: If the game sucks, the game sucks. In Magic if you don’t like standard, you can just play one of the other 4 competitive formats and odds are you will like one of them.

21. Yugioh refuses to publish decklists: Go fuck yourself Konami.

22. Magic pros are infinitely more likeable: I’m not gay, but I would let LSV or Travis Woo suck my dick. Every time I think a Yugioh pro might be cool, they just give me a reason to not like them. They just don’t care about their image at all.

23. Magic is not dependent on another franchise: If the Yugioh anime ceases to exist, the card game most likely goes down with it. Magic is its own thing. It’s not based on a movie, tv show, comic book, etc.

24. Yugioh has the shittiest coverage ever: And any attempts to provide decent coverage for your own events are met with threats by Konami about breach of contract, etc. Seriously, why are you so determined to be a piece of shit?

25. Yugioh has absolutely no transparency: When they make a massive change to the game, such as the weird banlist that we recently got, we have no idea why. Then you have people like Julia complaining about how we gossip too much.

26. Speaking of Julia, she’s a giant bitch: And apparently you can get banned for calling her a bitch on the internet lol. I’d love to get paid to do literal nothing and just complain all the time.

27. Draws, but no intentional ones: And they make virtually no attempts to catch people breaking this rule. Just use some common sense and change the rule so players don’t have to choose between not doing what is strategically advantageous and a 5% chance of getting caught and banned.

28. “Rule sharking” is a penalty: What people call rule sharking is either stone cheating (such as trying to trick their opponent into drawing extra cards so they’ll get a game loss) or just trying to actually enforce the rules. Half the time that I remind a judge that my opponent is supposed to get a PE-Minor warning, the judge decides that I’m rule sharking and gives me a warning instead. This is fucking stupid.

29. Locals don’t have judges: I’ve had endless arguments with yugioh players at locals that shouldn’t fucking happen because there should be a fucking judge. Every Magic FNM I’ve been to has a judge, because they are required to in order to host the event. I could probably just write a hundred reasons only about Yugioh’s judge program. Seriously, it fucking blows.

30. Kevin Tewart: Seriously, UDE fires this guy for sucking more dicks than designing balanced Yugioh cards and Konami just welcomes him with open arms. Also, this guy is the worst person at PR that I’ve ever seen. Good thing Yugioh players don’t care about being treated like shit all of the time.

31. Yugioh players have no balls whatsoever: No matter how many shitty things Konami does you all just put up with it. When Wizards fucks something up, the community gets on their dick and they back the fuck off and fix it. Planeswalker Points and the pro players club are good examples here.

32. Yugioh players have a horrible taste in food: You all want to spend $300+ to travel to some shitty event but you’re not willing to spend money on a decent restaurant? Wizards specifically holds events near Fogo De Chao restaurants because they know that Magic players don’t fuck around and want to eat real food.

33. Magic has a comprehensive rule guide: No seriously, every single rule in the game is in a single document. No exceptions. Yugioh doesn’t have this because its creators don’t even know the rules of their own game.

34. Overall Magic is more diverse in the number of decks and types of strategies that are viable: If you think this is actually a reason why Yugioh is better than Magic, then you’re a lazy retard.

35. You don’t even like your own game: Seriously, I’ve never heard one of you guys recommend that someone actually start playing Yugioh. Is it just cool to pretend to hate Yugioh, or are you all just pussies?

36. Yugioh events start 2 hours late: Or more. I’ve never been to a YCS that’s started anywhere near to its scheduled time. Not saying that MTG events are always on the dot, but you don’t have events that are scheduled to start at 10 AM actually starting at 1 PM.

37. Yugioh doesn’t have any kind of relevant ranking system: If I held a gun to every Yugioh player and told them I would shoot them unless they could tell me their COSSY rating, that would take care of 99.9% of the population. Neither game apparently likes Elo anymore, but Magic at least has something that people give a shit about.

38. Magic has a reserve list: Meaning that they actually give a shit about collectors.

39. Alistar Albans: I don’t care if he’s banned now; I’m still going to list it as a reason anyways.

40. Yugioh players don’t know what cheating is: People gloss over pro players admitting to cheating in their reports and then say things like, “LOL my opponent drew so well he must have been cheating.” The words “soft cheat” should not be part of your vocabulary. You’re part of the problem.

41. Yugioh players bitch about combo and burn: Seriously, no one in Magic particularly enjoys playing against belcher or mono red, but you guys take it to a whole new level. I mean it makes it easier for people like me to win, but having my opponent call me an ugly faggot or whatever because I beat them with a deck that they don’t like is fucking stupid. You all are just like the guys who complain about “meta decks.”

42. Magic has more women at events, and they are fairly attractive: Yes, I did in fact meet my current girlfriend at a Magic tournament. Must be nice, etc.

43. Magic respects and encourages teams: Yugioh literally tries to pretend that they don’t exist. See my "Censorship at YCS Toronto" youtube video.

44. Konami tries to prevent people from being good at their own game: No decklists, no competitive articles, no mention of teams, and generally what little coverage they have does not focus on certain players being more skilled than others. It’s all portrayed as a bunch of kids coming out to have a good time and see who gets luckier.

45. Events don’t get announced in any kind of reasonable timeframe: Yeah, I have no idea why Konami does this. There have been times where I have known about events 2 months before they were announced (because the store that was hosting it told me), which should never happen. Once an event is confirmed, it should just be posted. It’s not hard.

46. Shitty Youtubers who think they are relevant: Magic has pros streaming MTGO on twitch, Yugioh has Robbie Kohl doing an episode of perfecting gadgets #87. If you faggots at Konami would just post some fucking decklists we wouldn’t need to rely on Paul Clarke and SlimFastSymmetry to hunt faggots down and get deck profiles.

47. No one in Yugioh wants to play for money anymore: And if they do it’s like $5 a match. Magic has high-stakes money drafts going on at every event, and they are fucking awesome.

48. Hey we also broke your record for the largest tournament: And whenever Modern Masters 2 comes out we’re probably going to break it again lol.

49. Konami doesn’t understand who plays their game: Hint, it’s not mostly 10-12 year old kids. This is probably the root of several other problems.

50. Magic lets former pros into R&D: Yugioh does nothing like this. Anything R&D related sucks.

51. Magic lets stores come up with their own prize support for PTQs: The Game Academy wanted to add boxes as prize support for regionals (in hopes that it would get more people to show up) but Konami told them to stop doing that because it would confuse the players when they went to other regionals and they didn’t have boxes for top8. By comparison, when Cool Stuff last held a PTQ, they had prizes scaling up all the way up to 10 boxes for 1st.

52. Magic players don’t actively try to avoid talking to players who are worse than they are: “I can’t give away my precious dueling secrets!” Selfish fucks.

53. Magic has a hall of fame: Pimpin as fuck.

54. Magic even pays for your trips to pro tours: As though having the chance to win $40,000 wasn’t good enough already, you might be getting a free trip to Hawaii out of the deal. Most of the Pro Tours are intentionally held in fun places to visit.

55. Konami tries to police the internet: Just stop it. What we post on forums or do on Dueling Network is none of your concern.

56. Magic players are all about value: They love value so much that it’s cute and comical.

57. Magic players are masters of the pun: Everyone knows that the pun is the most intellectual form of humor. Yugioh players don’t come close.

58. Magic has parody sets “unhinged” and “unglued”: Yes, we know that our game is the best in the world, but we’re willing to make fun of it anyways.

59. Jump Magazine promos are fucking stupid: They can be worth as much as $100 each and aren’t accessible by the rest of the world. Who’s shitty idea was this? If you want, give away alternate art cards or something, not things like Stratos and Shock Master.

60. Duel Terminal cards are fucking stupid: A shitty arcade game combined with the lottery. Oh, and the cards that you get might not even be legal yet. And of course stores also have the option to just not put the $100 cards in the machine and sell them on ebay instead. I can’t think of a way that this setup could possibly be any worse.

61. ARG will never be as good as SCG: Sorry, I hate to break it to you.

62. Magic isn’t full of accessory-obsessed tools: You aren’t cool because you have a toothbrush in your calculator case set on a spellground mat. The person who came up with all of that shit was (literally) a faggot.

63. Set rotation: Yeah, it’s more awesome than you think. For one, we aren’t up several nights in a row madly F5ing so we can find out the bans. We already know what’s going away every year.

64. Konami has vendettas and the longest grudges: Don’t ever be relevant and do something that they don’t like. They will be hounding you until the end of time. Sucks even more if you happen to own a store.

65. Konami won’t let stores sell certain promos: Incredibly counterproductive. They all just create alternate ebay accounts anyways. It also just encourages players to sell these cards at events since the vendors won’t have them.

66. Attack of the Giant Card has better prize support than a YCS: Just think about this. You have the option to try to go 5-0 (or 4-0 into split) to win a $300-800 card (depending on which card it is) or you can try to go 9-2 in swiss followed by winning out top32, top16, and top8 to win a different card of similar value.

67. Yugioh Extravaganzas are the actual stupidest shit ever: It’s a YCS without the YCS. Get the fuck out. What is it with Yugioh and trying their damned hardest to create gimmicky, unnecessary, redundant tournaments and products? Duelist League and Pegasus League is stupid too, but listing separate reasons for those seems unfair. I’m not going to let myself off that easy.

68. “We’re trying to be different from Magic”: Don’t even get me started on this one. This is Kevin Tewart’s favorite catch phrase when responding to critics. For years, the reason Yugioh supposedly didn’t have things like PSCT and limited play was, “That would make us too much like Magic.” Nice excuse for sucking.

69. Pulling shitty rulings out of your ass for the purposes of sales: Inzektor Hopper being the prime example. Magic has never done anything like this.

70. Yugioh only has one print run for each product: Aka why a box can be $70 at your store this week and $100 the next. Once distributors are out of something, they’re out. If a recent Magic set is sold out, Wizards just prints more of it. Apparently that isn’t just common sense.

71. Wizards does infinite playtesting: They are playtesting some cards up to 2 years before they are ever printed. And that’s actual competitive testing with several different players, not Kevin and Jerome playing a few fun games on the kitchen table. This is next level shit.

72. Higher seed plays first in top cut of Magic: As though there would be any good reason to not reward someone for doing exceptionally well in the swiss.

73. Trading is the gayest thing ever in Yugioh: Everyone thinks they’re a vendor. I swear Yugioh players are actually just delusional. Magic players will do fair trades and not try to nickel and dime you. Ironic considering how I did say that Magic players are all about value. I guess they realize that using an hour to argue over $1 is bad value.

74. Yugioh players are incredibly insecure when it comes to their accomplishments: You wouldn’t see LSV and PV sitting down arguing about whose “creds” are better. Yugioh players feel the need to do this all the time. I don’t give a shit if you think the event that you topped was harder than mine. Go away.

75. Magic has more tiebreakers: There was actually a scenario where two players were tied for 32th place at a Yugioh event. Get off your ass and make some more tiebreakers. You’re embarrassing yourself.

76. Magic cards feel more personal: Colors, guilds, etc are all related to your personality. Players have an affinity for certain colors. There is a psychological aspect of the game that Yugioh just doesn’t have. This is also why I love making fake Magic cards to represent my friends but I can’t do the same for Yugioh.

77. Yugioh hates spectators: I guess this is a clever ploy for the judges to pretend they give a shit about cheating? It’s literally impossible to spectate at a premiere event under any circumstances. Magic doesn’t have a stick up its ass.

78. Yugioh times the top cut: Is this a joke? I understand that you didn’t want my top32 match at San Diego to take 3 hours, but seriously, people should not be losing their top cut matches due to time. It also makes judges feel the need to be harsher on slow play than normal, which leads to a people getting game losses in the top cut that they don’t deserve. Quit being faggots.

79. Yugioh Worlds: Everything about this event sucks. Some people don’t even know which cards are legal and which rulings are in place until the event starts. Bullshit happens at worlds every year.

80. Magic has more events: If you’re willing to go, there is a big event every weekend. Some Magic pros actually do this. Whether it be a PT, GP, or SCG, there’s always something going on. Also cool if you like watching coverage; there’s always something to watch.

81. Yugioh uses unnecessarily large numbers: Seriously, why do we start with 8000 lifepoints and monsters have 1800 attack? Couldn’t we just do 800 lifepoints and 180 attack? The last digit is always zero, so no reason not to just divide everything by 10. Magic could have us starting with 2000 life and creatures be 300/300, but that’s stupid. They call me a math genius for a reason folks.

82. Yugioh’s play/draw rule is too unbalanced: There is absolutely no reason to ever choose to go 2nd in Yugioh. Magic’s rule isn’t particularly balanced either, but at least you have to think about the pros and cons to play vs. draw in limited.

83. Konami is overly bitchy about sleeves: Konami is like your terrible wife that spends every second of her day just looking for trivial things that you’re doing wrong.

84. Magic has a mulligan rule: Because, you know, some players aren’t into that whole variance thing.

85. Magic has actual casual formats: Maybe if Yugioh had the same, all of you awful players would have something to go play and not feel bad about yourselves.

86. Magic gives byes to players who deserve it: If you grind hard, you deserve byes. Especially in a 14-round swiss event.

87. Magic has team events: These are good for so many reasons. They are extremely skill intensive; you’ll never see a team of baddies winning. There’s a reason why people like Billy Brake have been demanding these for awhile now.

88. Magic has multi-format events: Because being a well-rounded player is a skill that should be rewarded.

89. Magic has online pre-registration: No reason not to.

91. Konami’s site goes down whenever they get a relevant amount of web traffic: It’s almost like they know that they have no content worth viewing, so why pay for more bandwidth? Wizards.com doesn’t crash everytime they run coverage/make announcements.

92. Yugioh is nitpicky about zones: You aren’t even allowed to put your deck on the left side of the table despite the fact that it makes no difference. Magic lets you put your cards wherever you want.

93. Konami makes changes and denies that they are changes: Yes, they are basically delusional. They add things to the policy documents and then claim, “No, it’s actually always been this way.”

94. The #occupyygo movement sucked: In summary, “Wow Konami is being gay about YCS Toronto, so let’s not go. (A few days later) Well nevermind this banlist was a bit better than we expected it to be, so despite the fact that this movement was supposed to be about protesting the ambiguity of how the event was announced and not the banlist itself, you’re forgiven #disband.”

95. Duelists get DQed for not telling their opponent about game losses: This is a fault of the bad communication of judges. If someone has a game loss, it’s your responsibility as a judge to make that clear to both players. In Magic we never have issues with this.

96. “I don’t always make new mechanics, but when I do, I explain how they work before they are released” - The most interesting game in the world: The whole Xyz thing was such an embarrassment.

97. Magic actually has good altered art: As opposed to mediocre artists charging an arm and a leg just because they are female. Googling “best mtg altered cards” will bring up a ton of sick stuff. There are even 3D alters like this one: http://s3.gatheringmagic.com/uploads/2011/10/12/AS_13.jpg

98. Gishki is legal in Legacy: Aka Doomsday.

99. The Gatherer is better than Konami’s card database: Much more flexible in terms of how you can search for cards. A lot of people probably don’t even know that the Konami card database is a thing.

100. Resource system: Yes, it does make our game better. When you’re playing a game where you get to cast everything for free, it makes it a lot harder to design balanced cards. The Spoils has an even better resource system than Magic, but no one plays The Spoils.

 

The only thing that Yugioh has on Magic is the existence of DuelistGroundz. And also the fact that Cedric Phillips likes Justin Bieber.

 

In addition, this thread can be used as an Ask Me Anything. I’ll do my best to elaborate on why I believe Magic is the overall best TCG to be playing right now. I’ll probably post some stories later related to my TCG experiences in both games.

i mean, he made a racist joke after it, but he's also right about the theft part. sorry but whether you like it or not yugioh attracts many people who are low-life career thieves. i can't tell you how much happier i've been just being at events and not having to wear my backpack on my front side to keep my property from being taken from me. you guys can get mad that he made an unfunny racist joke after making the point, but please do not even pretend to try to convince yourself that the yugioh community does not have a very real stealing problem.
