building a cube

hey everyone

so at the moment i'm trying to build a cube draft for people at my locals to make use of, the only problem is that I do not have many cards. Does anybody here have a cube list? The thing is, I would love it if the cube didn't contain expensive cards because I'm trying to build it through donations (since I don't have many cards). Does anybody have any suggestions? What types of cards to use? What types of cards to stay away from?

thanks for all the help

The most common mistake that I see people make is to include extra deck monsters in their cube. I'd also figure that extra deck monsters are probably more expensive than the average card in general, so it should save you money as well.

What's wrong with extra deck monsters in a cube?

Extra Deck is fine in a cube. Also the cube I have runs off of BP3 rules where every monster is every type. Adds some really fun and unique situations and lets you add a lot of cool stuff to it.

I made a discussion about the Cube Format a while ago.
http://duelistgroundz.com/index.php?showtopic=157947

I haven't updated my list in a while but the big changes i made was i took out almost every archtype cards with the exception of Lightsworn.

I only put the best of the best from the extra deck into the cube and i just have them randomly placed into the cube, no extra pack of extra deck cards.

The best thing for cube is to not have situation cards.

If you have a color printer and don't mind using a good amount of ink up, id proxy the whole cube. I find that easier than finding each card.

When building a cube, the first thing you need to ask yourself is how many players do you plan to consistently draft with.

Size is very important. If you think you can consistently draft with eight players, I recommend aiming for 440 cards. With this size, each player gets 55 cards, meaning they can play with a 40 card main deck and a 15 card side deck. You can also do 480 to allow people to play a deck that goes up to the 60 card limit (without a side deck).

If you're looking moreso at four players, then I recommend 200-220. Four player cubes are very different since they usually contain a larger density of generic value cards than larger cubes. Larger cubes in my experience usually support a variety of archetypes for players to draft and counterdraft.

Also consider the method of drafting. Eight players usually means you're going to be pack drafting, meaning each card is distributed to a player. For four players, rochester is more appropriate (and arguably more fun), but you don't distribute all of the cards. On that note, you can rochester an eight player cube with four players, since you go through all of the cards while each player still ends with a small pool of cards for themselves.

In regards to the Extra Deck, I'm personally indifferent. I believe that it adds more flavor to the draft, but it's also complicated to draft. In my drafts, I always draft the Extra Deck last, which makes it difficult since it's easy to counterdraft certain strategies. Also, like Allen said, it ups to the cost by a lot.

I'd also consider not including fusions when choosing an Extra Deck, as it just makes it way too complicated.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XutR0yESaMnGuv8hmPKxi9a3IUzv4svhj3TmFeV4tFM/edit#gid=333949177

This is a link to my most recent cube with cool sorting features and stuff. You can sort categories if you make a copy for yourself if you want (just sort the specific column A-Z). It covers all sets up to DUEA, but hasn't added NECH cards yet (and there are a handful of cards I want to try).

When I build a cube, I end up scrolling through every card on the DN card pool, which is time consuming, but helps you find those hidden secrets that wouldn't seem apparent at first. Because of this, my cubes start off way above 440 and I start cutting cards from it til it reaches the right number. If you want the original list for this cube for some ideas I can post it or something idk.

Also proxying is very relieving, given you have the proper printer.

ALSO Mecha Phantom Beast Blackfalcon is one of the single best cards in cube drafting. Not including it is blasphemy.

Do you have a list of the BP3 cube? I wrote one up myself but I never tested it due to it not being popular among the people who I draft with, but I'm really interested in the design choices that go into it.

Lonefire Blossom is so broken with the BP3 Rules. Is there a reason why you didn't include cards like Raigeki, etc?

I made a discussion about the Cube Format a while ago.

If you have a color printer and don't mind using a good amount of ink up, id proxy the whole cube. I find that easier than finding each card. [/quote]
