Duelist Pack: Rivals of the Pharoh

1 post in this topic

New booster dropping the 15th, here's what the Konami site says about it at http://www.yugioh-card.com/uk/products/dp17.html

Sometimes a friend, more often an enemy, billionaire Duelist extraordinaire Seto Kaiba, pushed the Pharaoh to his limits from the very first episode. His Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon’s signature move, Neutron Blast, is now a Spell Card that lets your own Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon attack 3 times in a turn – once for each head – without interruption! Duelists can also use knowledge of their own greatest rivals to their advantage with Lullaby of Obedience, a one-of-a-kind Spell Card that lets you play any monster you can name from your opponent’s Deck!

Duelist Pack: Rivals of the Pharaoh contains 11 brand-new cards, and 46 cards in all: 24 Commons, 10 Rares, 6 Super Rares, and 6 Ultra Rares.

So two cards confirmed from that are Neutron Blast and Lullaby of Odebience

Neutron Blast

Spell
Target 1 Fusion Summoned "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon" you control; this turn, it can make a second and third attack during each Battle Phase, also if it attacks, your opponent's cards and effects cannot be activated until the end of the Damage Step.

Lullaby of Obedience

Spell
Pay 2000 LP and declare 1 Monster Card name; your opponent looks at their Deck, reveals 1 of the declared monsters if there is any, and applies 1 of these effects.
● Add it to the hand of the player who activated this card.
● The player who activated this card Special Summons it to their field in Attack Position, ignoring its Summoning conditions.

Before getting into those, there are just a handful of other confirmed cards from http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Duelist_Pack:_Rivals_of_the_Pharaoh

Silent Swordsman

Rank 4 Light/Warrior/Effect

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by Tributing 1 Warrior-Type monster, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. Once per turn, during the Standby Phase: This card gains 500 ATK. Once per turn, during either player's turn, when a Spell Card is activated: You can negate the activation. If this card is destroyed by battle, or if this card in its owner's control is destroyed by an opponent's card effect: You can Special Summon 1 "Silent Swordsman" monster from your hand or Deck, except "Silent Swordsman", ignoring its Summoning conditions.

Silent Magician

Rank 4 Light/Spellcaster/Effect

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned (from your hand) by Tributing 1 Spellcaster-Type monster, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. This card gains 500 ATK for each card in your hand. Once per turn, during either player's turn, when a Spell Card is activated: You can negate the activation. If this card is destroyed by battle, or if this card in its owner's control is destroyed by an opponent's card effect: You can Special Summon 1 "Silent Magician" monster from your hand or Deck, except "Silent Magician", ignoring its Summoning conditions.

Silent Sword Slash

Quick-Play Spell
Target 1 "Silent Swordsman" monster you control; that monster you control gains 1500 ATK and DEF, and if it does, until the end of this turn, it is unaffected by your opponent's card effects. This card's activation and effect cannot be negated. You can banish this card from your Graveyard; add 1 "Silent Swordsman" monster from your Deck to your hand.

Dark Sanctuary

Field Spell

If you would place a "Spirit Message" card on the field by the effect of "Destiny Board", you can Special Summon that card as a Normal Monster (Fiend-Type/DARK/Level 1/ATK 0/DEF 0). If Summoned this way, that card is unaffected by card effects, except "Destiny Board", also it cannot be targeted for attacks, but does not prevent your opponent from attacking you directly. If an opponent's monster declares an attack: Toss a coin, and if the result is heads, negate the attack, and if you do, inflict damage to your opponent equal to half that opponent monster's ATK.

Okay so right off the bat, it's clear Konami is going to continue cramming Legacy Support down our throats, which I mean has mixed reactions because it's cool for fans of the anime and casual players, but can be disappointing to meta-players who want new cards and new decks that can be competitive. But hey, Konami is going to do what makes Konami money, such is the purpose of a company. Anyways aside from this pack as a concept, we can talk about the few cards we do know about. It's going to fit the normal Duelist Pack format of a small (in this case 46 card) set with 5 cards per pack, and of those just how many have the potential to be meta-piercing?

Okay so the "Silent" support doesn't seem to be too groundbreaking, gives some recycling power and searching power to a long forgotten achetype. At most it could open the door to fun casual decks that focus on the Silent Swordsman and/or Silent Magician cards. They're rank 4s so there is perhaps a possibility for splashing into rank 4 spam decks but that's dependent on the extent of the sopport they receive.

Dark Sanctuary is an old Bakura card that could breathe life into fun, trolly, and frustrating Destiny board decks as it protects your Spirit Message cards from MST and Twister. Of course it would still struggle to keep the field spell itself and Destiny board on the field so magic deflector, Card guard, and imperial custom are musts, but nothing that could predictably be too competitive just based on the vulnerability of relying on a spell/trap win condition that will have to stay afloat via defensive tactics. Like an Exodia FTK that takes 5 turns to resolve.

Of the revealed cards 2 in particular have somewhat potential for competitive play.

Lullaby of Obedience could have side deck potential and be really useful in mirror matches. Extracting a card from your opponents deck to your field or hand means not only do they not have a card that could have been helpful to them, but it also give you a card advantage. At a cost of 2000 LP, the card you choose better be helping you push for game.

And finally Neutron Blast. Gives Blue-Eyes Ultimate three uninterruptable attacks. With 4500 atk, it's basically a free OTK once you get Ultimate Dragon onto the field unless they have at least 2 defense position monsters on the board. Time will tell if it will actually be worth Blue-Eyes player adding into their decks this card and means of making Ultimate Dragon. While three Blue Eyes are certainly not too difficult to bring to the field with all the support they have, Neo Blue-Eyes Ultimate essentially already had this ability to attack three times without the cost of having that spell card in hand and still has seen little competitive play.

Which cards from this upcoming pack are you looking forward to whether it be for nostalgic purposes, a deck you run, or a deck you would want to build?
