Nintendo Switch (new console)

I just downloaded Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, have completed world 1-1 and I feel early on that it is a charming strategy game. I like being able to do multiple things in a turn: move, attack and then retreat to cover. It's not too complicated so far but it has a layer of strategy that I think I will enjoy when I continue playing tomorrow. The game is a little simple at the start (I always just dash into an enemy, jump off a teammate and then attack the enemy again as my bread and butter move) but I'm sure I will have to start setting up my team to take cover more and decide when and when not to attack as I progress. I also like how the probability of your attack hitting is always 0%, 50% or 100% which reduces the luck factor because you know the likelihood of your plan working out. You don't for example have to worry about attacking at 90% chance of hitting, but still miss due to RNG. I think an online mode where you could test your team and strategy against an opponent would be a cool addition but if they had any intention of making one I'm sure it would already be in the game. I have never played a strategy game before but having recently picked up chess as well I would like to try to give this game an honest try.

In unrelated news, the next Splatoon 2 Splatfest will feature teams based on superpowers: flight or invisibility? For me I will choose team invisibility!

Not sure if you guys saw the Nintendo Direct yesterday, if not here it is (its 45mins) : I

There’s a lot of neat stuff in this direct, but the most important take away from it is that Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein 2 are coming to the Switch. Doom to come out this year and Wolfenstein to come out early next year. Two really huge AAA 3rd party titles coming to the Switch, from Bethestha of all companies. That is exactly what Switch needs, something that Wii/WiiU never really got and GameCube/N64 barely had.

If those do really well (and run well), expect more AAA 3rd party support for the Switch.

Super Mario Odyssey truly looks phenomenal. Breath of the Wild may have a fight on it's hands for game of the year. This is exactly why I bought the Switch; the quality of these exclusives (LoZ, ARMS, Splatoon, Super Mario, Mario Kart, Pokémon etc) is greater than any other console. It just needs those third party developers to take the plunge. Capcom are supposed to be very satisfied with sales of Ultra Street Fighter II, and I'll definitely be picking up FIFA 18. Bethesda also seem to believe in the console. So hopefully we'll see more and more third party titles.

They could still improve the quality of their online service though. A web browser and a way to message friends would be a good start. I hope they don't have the nerve to start charging for their online service before they have made updates and improvements like that though. I don't mind if it stays as it is as long as it's free, but I don't want to pay until there's more.

yup you are pretty much right.

then if you factor in portable skyrim etc. it becomes ridiculous for people like me who can't afford time infront of the TV a lot.

I've sunk 10+ hours into cold steel 2 at work. if i was to play it on PS3, i don't think i'd ever complete it.

Once a proper Fire Emblem game comes out (hopefully without the cashgrabbing which fates did) plus Portable Pokemon, it will literally explode. I want to buy Nintendo stock simply for that.

This isn't even factoring in the inevitable Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart which will come in the next few years.

Third party wise I'm still comfortably worried tho. Its sad bigger games have got dumped (dark souls 3, kingdom hearts 3, ff 15). I honestly thought switch might've gotten some form of <720p version of these games. It would have been VERY tempting given the portable aspect to actually complete bigger longer games.

I kind of can't wait for the 3DS to die so Nintendo can pump ALL their resources into the switch. I think the loss of the two screens might be a bit of a pain tho in keeping exclusive 3DS franchises exclusive as its not a simple case of "why not" port these titles to bigger consoles.

Pokken Tournament DX also comes out this Friday, I think. I was excited to try it out for a while but I played the free demo and was unimpressed. I think I'll just pass. My brother told me that long combos weren't much of a thing in Street Fighter II, it was more about Fireballs + Dragon Fists, and your own movement. That suits me well because I'm not good at learning combos, if I just need to do simple motions for my moves I prefer it. For this reason I am considering picking up Ultra Street Fighter II instead.

Has your brother seen Ultra Street Fighter 2? Specifically Violent Ken, Evil Ryu and Akuma? They break the game completely.

generally speaking long combos aren’t that much of a thing in SF, unlike Marvel vs Capcom or Tekken, mainly the focus is on spacing and zoning but in Ultra...its just touch of death combos. Its literally the goofiest version of Street Fighter 2, its fun but broken.

Just go look up Akuma, Violent Ken and Evil Ryu shit in the game. None of what they’re doing is very hard to do either. Just a heads up.

That's a real shame then. I thought Evil Ryu and Violent Ken were almost the same as the original versions of the characters, like they were just a costume change. Why mess around with the metagame of a classic fighting game?

Its Capcom, they like to break a good thing. Look at what happened to SF5 from SF4.

How do you get these "hero" weapons online? I like the Dualies and I assume these hero versions are the best versions of those wespons.

I'm level 15 and switch between Splat Dualies and Aerospray MG most times. Aerospray covering so much ground with paint is valuable on Turf War.

HERO weapons can be unlocked for online play after you beat every single player level including boss battles with that 1 specific weapon.

Just when I thought about taking a break from playing, and get back into ARMS, they do this. Basically two big updates coming up this holiday season for Splatoon 2.

Update on 24th November

MakoMart stage (enters rotation on Saturday)

A new Salmon Run stage, Salmonid Smokeyard (available from Friday)

140 extra pieces of gear

New music from "the punk-flavoured Bottom Feeders (pictured) and classically-trained avant-garde-style Ink Theory"

New hair styles

Scan Splatoon amiibo to take in-game pictures

Max level raised to 99 (afterwards, you can “prestige” like Call of Duty to rank *1)

Swap gear between battles within the online lobbies

Second update in mid-December

Clam Blitz battle mode - "Competing Inklings are tasked with collecting clams scattered around the stage. After one is picked up, the clam weirdly follows you. Your objective is to throw the clam into the basket near your opponent’s base. The first team to score 100 points wins! The baskets are protected by a barrier, which must be destroyed first. After collecting 10 clams, you’ll earn a Power Clam. These super-powered clams are the key to breaking the barrier, so strategy will definitely be involved in deciding which clams are used to destroy the barrier and which are used to earn points. Not to mention the extra-satisfying opportunity to steal your opponents’ clams by splatting them."

'Coming Soon'

New stage - Shellendorf Institute

Two more returning stages - Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall

The new ranked mode is welcome, that was definitely needed as well as being able to swap gear in the lobbies (really important as very often the rotation includes stages that are suited to very different weapon kits from each other. Also backing out is annoying). Really good FREE update just in time for the holiday gaming season.

I think I'm buying one of these this month.

I have a Vita, 3DS, Wii U, PS4, Gaming rig.. but I found myself recently only playing games when on the go.

I have cleared quite a few 3DS/Vita titles and I can't really find many left which compare to how much I want to play BOTW, Mario Odyssesy etc. on the go.

I bought a switch.

It has a tiny scratch on the matte part of the bezel so I think I'm going to swap it on Saturday.

Can someone confirm if their's has this or not?

Last thing I want to do is swap out one for another one with a fault.

Oh yeah, anyway I've played around with this Switch for about 10-15 minutes with Mario Oddyssey. I don't want to really play through it too much as I have to return it on Saturday.

Anyway..

....

..

I've had a PS3, PS4, Nintendo 3DS, Ps Vita, Wii U, Gaming rig, played through DOlphin, GBA, etc. etc.

THIS IS THE BEST CONSOLE I'VE EVER EXPERIENCED.

I don't know how to explain the beauty and magic of being able to play hand held, then smack the kickstand out, sit back and relax + play with two hands apart. its MENTAL.

Nintendo's exclusives are going to look amazing on this thing. The screen is beautiful. I honestly don't feel like I need more which is not what can be said for my Vita or 3DS.

The ergonomics are FANTASTIC for a handheld. The screen size is GREAT. The bezels arent actually big at all.

The speakers are great for how tiny it is.

I'm really really really shocked at how good this thing is. Like WTF. Its like the magic toy you open up at Christmas. This thing will go EVERYWHERE with me and I'll probably scratch it the fuck up by how much I use it.

Nintendo are onto something MAGICAL here. The only thing stopping them from total dominance is people need to get this thing in their fucking hands, play around with the joycons, see how easy it is to sit back and relax ANYWHERe and enjoy a phenomenal experience.

Also the rumble is really really nice.. i know HD rumble take the piss out of it.. but its like the icing on the cake. Its such a nice feeling and very hard to describe.

If someones got spare change, buy a switch + odyssey and just tell me  you dont have that childhood magic feeling back in the day when we bought our first N64 and put in mario.

long season    4

I've been hesitant on buying a Switch, I've fallen into the trap of buying Nintendo consoles for 1 or 2 exclusives before and then nothing else has interested me for the remainder of the console's lifespan. With Bayo 3 being announced I'll probably bite the bullet, though.

BOTW and Odyssey really do look like great games and I feel like I'm missing out.

switch is legit the best console ever produced

I’m starting to feel this way myself. Having the option of playing top quality games at home and playing those same games on the go if I wish, is literally the best thing in gaming right now and should be the way gaming goes going forward. Especially as games get longer and people have less time just sit down in front of a traditional style console and play.

Brownie points for having the option of playing in a table top mode and always having at least 2 controllers at the ready to bust someone’s ass at a moments notice.

yup its just mental.  I wish I could convert half my steam library to this kind of format and I'd be laughing.

I can only hope Steam give up on their shitty steam controllers + boxes and try to create something like this and keep it simple like Nintendo has. It would save me A LOT of money double dipping.  I guess some could argue just buy a gaming laptop but poor battery life / inefficient performance / heating issues / build quality / price issues all kind of make me never want to go down that route.

for £270 the Switch is a steal for the piece of tech you're getting when you take into account the exclusive library, portability and versatility.

a 50-100 hour RPG is now more than fine for me with the switch. Likewise I think this will be the first Mario I try to properly complete because I can always devote 10 minutes to doing an odd power moon. On the wii U, i had to:

1. Turn on my TV

2. Power on the Wii U

3. Find the Wii U gamepad and enter Mario

4. Wait for it to load

5. Pair my controller  or wait for it to sync up

6. wait to load into a level

then something IRL like gym/family/work comes up, and I have to leave.

Those days are loooooong gone.

My list of Switch games I aim to grab are:

ARMS (tell me if I'm wrong but this game looks DOPE AF)

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

I'm on the fence about:

Splatoon (I hate COD, can never get into FPS, find them usually unexciting.. i get less enjoyment, more furstration, can anyone r/v me on this?)

Splatoon 2 is great, it's a third person shooter though not FPS. Matches are 3 minutes each so good for short gaming sessions. It's very fast-paced but people have gotten good at the game now. I wasn't doing too bad when the game first came out but last time I played online I was destroyed because everybody had improved.

You said you have a sister you can play with before so I think you should consider Snipperclips. It's a creative and relaxed puzzle game best enjoyed in co-op, and you don't need to be a gamer to have fun with it. Rocket League is also on this console now, and on sale at 25% off until December 28th.

I made a friend code thread a while ago for people to add each other from here if you wanted to post yours.

I wouldn’t say most people have gotten good at Splatoon, most people are still really bad. Even at S/S+ rank. Now would actually be a really good time to play since a new game mode came out a few days ago and a lot of the people online are just getting the game due to the holidays (and especially when Christmas rolls around).

Also, the game is much easier to play and get decent at than COD. And more fun.

odyssey is fucking incredible btw. first 2 levels have more ingenuity and genius gameplay wise (in 2 levels) than any Ps4 title i've played except bloodborne.
