The sad part is that people are legit worried this could happen again because there are no warning signs.

That story says nothing about the friends he jumped in with.  You'd imagine they'd know about his aversion to water and would be there to help him when the time arises

I would certainly never let a friend who can't swim jump into a canal and would be more than willing to smack some sense into him if needed. But they were all 13-year-olds and probably didn't know about his phobia or weren't fully aware of the risk.

 

If they were older, I would think they're some of those so-called friends who encourage people to do dangerous stuff by telling them how cool it is.

Funny thing is that've had a cousin who died in a similar way and he did it with his friends.  Only difference is that I don't recall him not being able to swim

 

Still real dumb tho
