Yugioh Duel Links FTP Beginner Guide

Last Updated:4/19/18

Notes

-All tips/suggestions are based on the state of the game and predictions will not be made.

-This guide is meant for any FTP that wants to start off competitively as quickly as possible and it’s assumed players who have read this have not done the Crowler event.

-Remember to create a Konami ID because it's what backs up your account and if you undownload it or your mobile device breaks you are screwed unless you get lucky and Konami recovers it.

WHAT NOT TO DO:

Do not trade in level up cards unless you know for sure you can get them from farming.

Do not trade in Barrel Dragon,Blue-Eyes White Dragon,Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl,Legendary Fisherman, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, and Blast Held By A Tribute due to them being needed for Stage Missions and are a pain to obtain from farming.

Other cards to not trade in are event and roaming duelist SR/UR cards. Also Insect Queen & Harpie Lady Sisters since they cannot be obtained from farming and are only useful if you want to unlock duel mats with their images.

Waste Gems on terrible or old sets unless they have farming staple cards or staple cards needed for a specific meta deck.

Competitive Goals

-Complete Mokuba Bingo as much as possible to get a Enemy Controller and to unlock Mokuba.

-To build Aliens (One of the best and cheapest deck).

-Try to get 60 and 100 wins in pvp to get 2 free SR cards every pvp season.

-Reach Stage lv 30 to unlock lv 40 Legendary Duelist.

Think you left out a key part of the game and F2P aspect, I went ahead and drafted this, pick apart at it as you will;

Auto Duels

The main way F2P players earn their cards, and all players for that matter, is through grinding up the characters levels and earning cards/gems/gold. This means constantly dueling standard duelists as a means to earn exp. This is the mobile aspect of the game shining through, and at the later levels it will take days to level up characters. Thus the "Auto-Duel" function was added, as a means to duel standard and event duelists quickly, using a AI to calculate duels and play has increased speed in gameplay, significantly downgrading the time it takes to beat opponents, by means of a simple click of a button.

Since the deck is played with a AI which uses algorithms to decided moves, the AI doesn't take into account game state or card advantage. If it sees it can make a move, it will make that move, despite the fact keeping cards means they can attack for game that turn. Because of this nature, a good auto duel deck is a deck that runs lots of lower level powerful monsters, and cards that keep those monsters alive or boost their attack power, and doesn't rely too heavily on discarding/tributing for costs.

Another thing to note is abilities. The AI is incapable of using manual activating abilities, such as kaiba's beatdown or yugi's destiny draw. Because of this, abilities that are automatically in play such as peak performance or LP Boost are more beneficial to run. You can be fine not running any abilities, but any advantage can help win more duels.

Attribute Beatdown
These decks are made possibly via Echoes of Silence, Electric Overload, Crimson Kingdom and Dawn of the Destiny, which introduced field spells that boost attributes atk by 500 and decrease their def by 400. These 4 sets have power creeped the game into introducing 1800 atk lv4 monsters as well, with significant easy pull rates, some of them being rares, meaning a great benefit for F2P players. These sets also funny enough, introduce more monsters for a particular attribute in the next set, a pain for sure to switch sets, but if you're running low on high atk monsters then you know where to find them.

Examples of these kind of decks (note; some cards are not from the aforementioned sets, any missing spell/ traps that are not the field spells can be replace with anything decent, the same can be said about the monsters, however the higher atk or effects that boost atk are more valuable then most other effects).

Light:
1 Chaos Command Magician
1 Thunder Nyan Nyan
2 Ninja Grand Master Sasuke
3 X - Head Cannon
2 Herald of Creation
1 Hoshiningen

2 Luminous Spark
2 Super Rush Headlong
2 Lucky Battle Axe

2 Security Orb
1 Windstorm of Etaqua
1 Curse of Anubis

Dark:
1 Angmarl, the Fiendish Monarch
1 Twin Barrel Dragon
2 Genex Ally Powercell
3 Maiden of Macabre
3 Dark Blade

2 Mystic Plasma Zone
2 Super Rush Headlong

2 Lucky Battle Axe

2 Security Orb
1 Windstorm of Etaqua
1 Curse of Anubis

Fire:
1 Knight of the Red Lotus
1 Goka, Pyre of Malice
1 Charcoal impatchi
1 Heavy Knight of The Flame
3 Fire King Yaksha
3 Great Angus

2 Molten Destruction
2 Super Rush Headlong
2 Order to Charge

1 Beast Rising
1 Mirror Wall
1 Windstorm of Etaqua
1 Curse of Anubis

Water:
3 Gemini Lancer
3 Gagagigo
3 Uminotaurus
1 Star Boy

2 Umiiruka
2 Order to Charge
2 Super Rush Headlong

1 Mirror Wall
1 Windstorm of Etaqua
1 Curse of Anubis
1 Security Orb

Wind:
1 Luster Dragon #2
1 Spear Dragon
1 Cave Dragon
1 Red-Eyes Wyvern
1 Harpy Lady 1
1 Harpy Lady 2
1 Harpy Lady 3
2 Birdface
2 Sonic Duck

2 Rising Air Current
2 Super Rush Headlong
1 Elegant Egotist

1 MetalMorph
1 Mirror Wall
1 Windstorm of Etaqua
1 Curse of Anubis

General Beatdown

As seen as above, auto decks generally use high attack monsters to attack for game. If you are new and are missing many cards to make said decks, or have splurged on packs not realizing which ones you should have been buying, it is perfectly fine to put all your highest attacking monsters into 1 deck and support it like you would with the attribute decks.

Example;

2 Gemini Lancer
2 Gagagio
2 X-Head Cannon
2 Dark Blade
2 Great Angus

2 Super Rush Headlong
2 Lucky Battle Axe
1 Ririyoku

1 Metalmorph
1 Inspiration
1 Enchanted javelin
1 Windstorm of Etaqua
1 Curse of Anubis

Themes

Ever hear people say " this theme takes such skill to play", meaning the complete opposite? Some decks are like this, which is good in the AI's sense, as just by doing its job it can bring powerful monsters to the field. In Echoes of Silence, the LV monsters are such a theme, or The Creator and it's incarnate in Electric Overload. With Mako Tsunami, A legendary Ocean decks with hammer shark are not only decent PVP decks, but can be used quite successfully with the auto duel AI as well. Naturia can most times be ran efficiently by the AI too, as well as using a blue-eyes beatdown deck . In general, if the theme centers around special summoning monsters from the hand/ deck without too much resources wasted, the deck has potential to be a auto duel deck.

Grinding Skills
If you are after certain abilities for duelists and want to maximize your time and efforts, auto duel decks can be made to try and maximize your point values at the end of the duel. Such auto duel decks center around Ritual/ Fusion summons for the bonus, and run any prismatics and glossy cards to rack as much value as possible for up to 2000-3000k. However as mentioned before the AI doesn't take into account game state or card advantage. This can lead to some questionable moves such as skipping turns or setting fusion/ ritual requirements in def mode when not needed. Ritual decks also have to be wary of the AI ritual summoning a second time with a already ritual summoned monster, for no reason. These decks can do fine in the long run, but compared to the above methods, it has the least consistent win-rate.

Final Notes

As explained over again, the AI is by no means perfect. It is a program with its faults, and even with a perfectly made auto duel deck, there will be times it makes mistakes, makes unnecessary plays, and extend duels that don't need to. The good part about this? Most standard duelist duels can let you afford 1-2 mistakes, which makes the mistakes null and void often, and can sometimes lead to increases in after duel point assessments. With all this said, Happy Grinding.

Yugioh Duel Links FTP Beginner Guide

Notes

-All tips/suggestions are based on the state of the game and predictions will not be made. (September 2017)

-This guide is meant for any FTP that wants to start off competitively as quickly as possible.

-Remember to create a Konami ID otherwise since it's what backs up your account and if you undownload it or your mobile device breaks you are screwed unless you get lucky and Konami recovers it.

WHAT NOT TO DO:

Do not trade in level up cards unless you know for sure you can get them from farming.

Do not trade in Barrel Dragon,Blue-Eyes White Dragon,Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl,Legendary Fisherman and Red-Eyes Black Dragon due to them being needed for Stage Missions and are a pain to obtain from farming. You shouldn't trade in any cards that our the "main card of a character" as all will be required for stage missions - for example, I had to farm a "Blast Held by a Tribute" at level 44 and it took me over a month to get past that level as I'd already traded it in.

Other cards to not trade in are event and roaming duelist SR/UR cards. Also Insect Queen and Harpie Lady Sisters since they cannot be obtained from farming and are only useful if you want to unlock their respected duel mats.

Competitive Goals

-To build Naturias (quickest and cheapest deck) and then eventually Red-Eyes.

-Get 2-3x Copies of Super Rush Headlong from Dawn of Destiny.

-Try to get 30 and 100 wins in pvp to get 2 free SR cards every pvp season.

-Reach Stage lv 30 to unlock lv 40 Legendary Duelist.

-As a general rule, focus on getting cards that will always be relevant (Econ, Sphere Kuribohs) and then focus entirely on the latest sets as most cards get powercreeped (remember when everyone was spending loads for Dunames Dark Witch? lol)

Terms

Farming: Is a method in which you try to get a duel assessment score of 5000 or higher to increase your chances of getting certain cards from Legendary duelist.

Kaiba or Yami Yugi?

It is best to choose Kaiba if you want to play PVP as soon as possible due to Beatdown being the best skill with Naturia which is cheapest decent deck meta at the moment.

Card Trader Cards To Get

Mythical Beast Cerberus

Mandatory and only need one in standard Cerberus farming decks

Riryoku

Useful in Cerberus farming decks and decent when staring off in pvp

Magical Mallet

Very useful farming card.

Riryoku Field

Useful for farming Kaiba

Red-Eyes Black Dragon

Only need one copy of this since Rex and Joey’s starter decks both contain this card.

Stage Missions:

-Are missions that give you gems stones, or keys for doing a certain task

-Recommended to stay at stage 30 which is when you unlock Lv 40 Legendary duelist and is one of the easiest stages to grind for color keys and gold.

Level Up Priorities

Kaiba:

Lv 13 Beatdown (The best skill for Naturias).

Mai:

Lv25 Windstorm of Etaqua (Is a one of the best trap cards in the game).

Bandit Keith

Lv 20 Restart

One of the best skills in the game especially in Red-Eyes decks.

Lv 25 Metalmorph

Is a decent trap card and lets you run over anything on your bp. You can get more copies of it from farming Lv 40 Joey.

Yami Yugi

Lv 20 Sorcery Conduit

Is the best skill for Cerberus Farming decks besides Draw Sense Low Level)

What To Spend Gems On:

-Best box set for beginners to buy is Dawn of Destiny due to the fact its only has 80 packs, you can build Naturias since they are all Rares or commons, and it has one of the best spells in the meta Super Rush Headlong. The Second best box set to spend gems on is Crimson Kingdom only for Red-Eyes Wyvern (the only expensive card in the set I would suggest you reset the box for to get 2 copies of),Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon (Only need 1 copy and is SR)  and Red Stone of Legend (A Rare you only need 3 copies for Red-Eyes).

Decks Starting Out

Naturia

Skill: Beatdown

Monsters:12

3x Naturia Hydrangea

3x Naturia Marron

3x Naturia Pumpkin

3x Naturia Stag Beetle

Spells:4

2x Despell

2x Super Rush Headlong

Traps:4

2x Exterio’s Fang

1x Metalmorph

1x Windstorm of Etaqua

Other cards you can add

Botanical Girl

Enemy Controller

Ririyoku

Covering Fire

More copies of Super Rush Headlong and Metalmorph

The strategy of the deck is to swarm and OTK the opponent as quickly as possible using the skill Beatdown with Hydrangeas and Stag Beetle. Going first you want to open up with Marron milling Stag Beetle due to Stag can special summon another Stag using its effect and going second you want to open Pumpkin with Stag/Hydrangea or both. The major downside is this deck bricks very easily and has a hard time getting over 2200 relies heavily on Beatdown or backrow to run over them.

Red-Eyes (Recommended to build after Naturia)

Skill:Restart

Monsters:

3x Red-Eyes Black Dragon

2x Red-Eyes Wyvern

1x Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon

Spells:

2-3x Card of Red Stone

1x Despell

3x Red-Eyes Insight

2x Super Rush Headlong

Traps:

3x Champion’s Vigilance

3x Red-Eyes Spirit

Recommended Reward Cards To Get

Normals

Shark Cruiser/Hoshiningen

The only good normal cards at the moment.

Rares

Covering Fire

It is semi decent in Naturias until you get more Super Rush or Enemy Controllers.

The Sanctuary In The Sky

In case of really good Fairy support.

The League of Uniform Nomenclature

If you think it has potential use.

Super Rares

Enemy Controller

Is one of the best spells in the game that is useful in 90% of meta decks and Kaiba is impossible to farm unless you get really lucky or have the Paradox Brothers (which are event duelist).

Red-Eyes Insight/Red-Eyes Spirit

Both are 3x mandatory staples for Red-Eyes otherwise the only other way to get it is from the roaming duelist event.

Champion’s Vigilance

Is a mandatory 3x staple in Red-Eyes and the only other way to get it is from farming Kaiba.

I've added and bolded a few things :)

I think the priority should always be to level up characters as quickly as you possibly can in order to build up gems. Getting Mai to level 25 ASAP is a priority for Windstorm which is insanely useful initially. After that foxcus on Paradox Brothers (gate guardian otk farming is so easy and good) in order to get the necessary cards

I agree with you added although I feel Sphere is already powercreeped unless you run Relinquished or Phoenix. Also new players will not have access to the Paradox Brothers yet due to them being gate event duelist.

In general I wouldn't recommend digging old boxes for UR's like Sphere Kuriboh at all

e-con on the other hand, yes, cause you can get it from Kaiba

The key to FTP is to think ahead and not waste gems on old sets cause you'll get behind when they keep releasing newer ones

So i just started playing about a month ago and was wondering if the above still holds true. I built naturia's and i think the deck is rubbish. I kept getting crushed in PVP so I built a dragon deck which has been doing well. I also just saw marks post about cyber angels so I will start trying to get those cards. I really don't have the cards to farm these new characters (or the paradox brothers) so i will just keep with the dragon deck which will consistently score over 3000. I have some good staple cards (Windstorm, 1 mirror wall, 2 econ, 2 super rush, tribute to the doomed). I think with the cyber angels now if you just started playing you need to go back and buy old sets (to get senju and sonic bird)

Is the consensus that cyber angels are the best and I should just use them now? are naturias still good but i am using them wrong? Red-eyes seems busted (at least when I play against them) but they are expensive. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Right now I am running this in PVP

Skill: Peak Performance

2 Vanguard of Dragon

2 Totem Dragon

2 Hieratic Dragon of Nuit

3 Hunter Dragon

2 Blue-Eyes White Dragon

1 Watttail Dragon

2 Enemy Controller

2 Super Rush Headlong

1 Tribute to the Doomed

1 Mirror Wall

1 Windstorm of Etaqua

1 Floodgate Traphole

1. Yes Naturia are terrible but are recommended because they are the cheapest deck you can build in the beginning of the game and are usually decent in ranked (Though not KOG anymore at the most now a days it can get you up to platinum 1-5 maybe depending on the build since the deck is can be very bricky). Though from the looks of it seems perhaps Dragons take that place instead.

2.Yes Cyber Angels are very good and use them if you can get them. They are cheap outside of Senju/Sonic which you can get away with one of each and leveling up Alexis is a priority for 2x Cyber Petit Angel, Cyber Angel Dakini, and Machine Angel Absolute Ritual.

3. Red-Eyes are good and was tier 1 before Cyber Angels came along. The only expensive cards for Pure Red-Eyes decks are Insight (Can only can get it from a pvp reward, event repeat), Spirit (Same as Insight), Wyvern (Is a UR in Crimson Kingdom but you can get away without it), and Champion's Vigilance (Have to farm Kaiba for it). Red-Eyes Zombie decks are more expensive and not worth it at this point.

If you get your free SR ticket from the GX start up (which I believe is still happening) I would suggest getting Insights and Spirits then after you get the rest from pvp you can build a decent Red-Eyes build.

Should we update this, say when the next set drops? Quite a few changes have happened such as Cyber Angels being introduced, and Union Attack becoming a PVP reward which should probably be a must grab for beginners.

Well shit, guess I ate my own words lol. If I get time tomorrow I'll begin working on it, I want to try and colloborate mine and inti's post, and possibly your post on Cyber Angels Mark.

For reference in doing so, how do you put things in spoilers again?

For level up priorities think you mean seto kaiba not yami yugi for beatdown at Lv 13 (listed correctly in the thread but not in the google doc), may as well include crowler too since he also gets that skill. Also in competitive goals 60 wins now gets you a SR ticket with 100 wins getting you a third one.

I added that to the guide as well as a budget Ancient Gear decklist since the Crowler event is going on.

I made a new updated if anyone wants to make any changes let me know. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VaeEgS5QE-dnKy9qfh58EfVKMmOWUaUOGq3o8gNftBE/edit?usp=sharing

Hej there!

I followed the old guide; started 2 days ago.

I did already built Naturia (from 1 full box) and started pulling on Crimson.
Although after 60 packs I still didn't receive Red-eyes wyvern, so I don't think I can built a Red-Eyes deck anytime soon.
(Is there any way to buy/get red eyes wyvern outside of the regular box?)

Today I managed to get a 10 win spree with Naturias in the arena, so the deck is quite effective, but I would really wanna step up my game a bit more.

Currently using:

Seto Kaiba (Beatdown)

-3x Naturia Marron
-3x Naturia Hydrangea
-3x Naturia Pumpkin
-2x Naturia Stag Beetle
-1x Mythical Beast Cerberus (seems to cause a lot of confusion =D)

-1x Riryoku
-1x Tribute to the doomed
-1x Super Rush Headlong
-2x Enemy Controller
-1x De-Spell

-1x Metal Morph
-1x Exterio's Fang

Do u have any advice on what I should do from this point and what other decks I am able to built?

-Stick to the Crimson Kingdom box, pull it (entirely) for 9000 gems.
-Start pulling something else
-Save Gems for now
-Grind Dr. Crowlers Ancient gears (Currently at 400k with 400 notebooks left)
-Reroll and start over

Would like an honest opinion =D

Thanks in advance!

The guide was outdated and shouldve been updated earlier

i would recommend saving gems, until you have an idea of what you’re doing long term. For exmaple I have 10 000 gems right now, so when the new set gets released i can evaluate my options before KC cup and spend them accordingly

you should grind crowler and try to get as much as you can since ancient gears are really good and probably your best bet right now without spending gems

Well at the moment the best option would be grind against Crowler to unlock him and get his cards since Ancient Gears are viable deck (Not as powerful as Cyber Angels and Red-Eyes Zombie mind you. The only thing viable in Crimson is Red-Eyes Zombie decks but that deck is too expensive and could easily get power crept. So yes save your gems and follow Mark's advice.

what's an example of an good ancient gear deck?

In my opinion a viable ftp version of AGs would be this and if anyone has a opinion or change to let let me know.

Skill: Middle Age Mechs

Monsters:10

3x Ancient Gear Beast

1x Ancient Gear Golem

3x Ancient Gear Knight

3x Ancient Gear Soldier (Could easily be replaced with a bigger beater or Sergeant Electro)

Spells:4

1x Ancient Gear Castle

1x Despell

2x Enemy Controller (add a 3rd copy when you get it)

Traps:5-6

1x Curse of Anubis

1-2x Metalmorph

2-3x Wall of Disruption

1x Windstorm of Etaqua

Other Cards You Can Add

Mechanical Chaser

Vorse Raider (If you pulled it while going for a Wall of Disruption)

3rd Enemy Controller

Riryoku

Covering Fire

Rare Metalmorph

Otherwise the DL Meta build is decent with the only expensive cards being Sergeant Electro, Floodgate, and Wall.

Outside of that save gems and I would not bother with Crimson Kingdom only thing viable in that set is Red-Eyes Zombie decks but that deck is too expensive and could easily get power crept. Hmm, Kind of feels like I've wasted 3000 gems now, which seems quite a lot and it was something I wanted to avoid using a guide.
With grinding Crowler, do u mean getting him to 300k for his character or do the entire 4,5mil?

I do have a spare Ipad aswell where I could start a 2nd account and decide later. I spend only 2 days in the game, but it has been quite a grind I must say, haha.

On second thought its probably best you don't reroll since you already unlocked Crowler and I don't know how many of AG cards you have but if you have 2-3 of all of them I would not recommend it. Yeah starting out requires to grind a lot if you want to play this game competitively.

Floodgates are expensive but you can prob replace them and the deck would still be fine, you need some kind of good backrow though (disruption prob being the cheapest option that has staying value)

If you really don’t have shit just try to get E-Con, Metalmorph, Windstorm, Curse, Rare Metalmorph etc - you could even make an ok deck that way without spending gems at all - although it obv wouldn’t be as good
