Shining Legends Singles Discussion Thread

Shining Legends officially released on October 6th, 2017. Which cards are you expecting to make an impact on the meta? Will they form new decks or be used as existing tech elsewhere?

To start, I wanted to highlight a couple of cards that I have seen people talking about:

VenusaurShiningLegends3.jpg

Venusaur's ability allows each Grass energy to provide 2 Grass. While this isn't particularly helpful in the currently most popular Grass deck, Golisopod, it might pair well with attackers that are otherwise held back by needing multiple attachments. For instance, Mega Beedrill EX's Hazard Stinger becomes a 1-energy attack when paired with Venusaur, inflicting paralysis and 4-damage poison.

RaichuGXShiningLegends30.jpg

Raichu GX's first attack deals 20 damage + 20 damage for every Lightning energy you have attached to all of your Pokémon. To my knowledge, this doesn't combo with anything particularly great at the moment, but it is a card that could work well if Lightning gets energy support similar to Gardevoir, Geomancy Xerneas, a Rain Dance effect, or the Venusaur above. Let me know if there are cards this works well with that I am currently overlooking. If there's even something like 'all energy attached become Lightning energy', it might work for a casual deck.

MarshadowShiningLegends46.jpg

Marshadow's effect has both players shuffle their hand into the deck and draw 4 cards. This could be another way to reload hands after playing out your other cards while also disrupting effects such as Beacon Vulpix's search.

ZoroarkGXShiningLegends54.jpg

Speaking of draw support abilities, Zoroark-GX has garnered some attention. It has a discard 1 to draw 2 effect, providing consistent value from the bench. However, it isn't a very powerful attacker, dealing just 20 per benched Pokémon. Like Tapu Lele, it would be played for the effect, but it can attack in a pinch.

Those are the ones that caught my attention at first glance. Do you plan on using any of them in your decks? Did I overlook anything? Feel free to discuss below.

Is Marshadow a basic?

Yes.

To clarify the effect, it is on-play (like Tapu Lele) and not OPT (like Octillery).

That's more balanced then.

Zoroark is the only good card from this set and it's barely even a good card

Try and persuade me otherwise

that's about the best i got. I remember Flashfire Pyroar saw some play during its time, and Ninetales decks run 1 Burning Shadows version, so maybe Hoopa isn't totally useless?

Is Baby Raikou in this set? A friend of mine wanted to build Raichu/Lycanroc as a fun deck, but I don't even know if Elixir is still in rotation.

I can't believe no-one's discussing how amazing Mewtwo-GX's SR art is:

Hoopa and this are the only meta-relevant cards, though marshadow is potentially cute (marshadow + delinquent is rude). Venusaur would be amazing if we had mons that it supported properly, but as things stand we don't.

Yes, Raikou is in the set.

Elixir was printed in BKT or BKP which is still legal.

Is Zoroark GX better than an Octillery line?

+ One card instead of two (edit: oops mascis pointed out you still need to run zorua)

+ Works at any point in the game

- Gives two prizes

- Not searchable by Brooklet Hill

- Less potential for "big" draws e.g. after an ultra ball search
