Well it's over and Australia's Jack Turnbull should be a very happy man. He piloted Gladiator Beasts through a 5-1 finish on Day 1, ran through a mirror match vs. Patrick Hoban in the Top 16, defeated the only Volanic Monarch build in the tournament ran by Blairy Murray-Clark and overcome the Twilight builds of Zaiem Ahmad and of course AJ Tiplady to walk away with the title of champion this weekend.

Congratulations Jack Turnbull, winner of the Grand Prix Championship New York City!</div>

Day 1 Intro

Marshaun Young

March 24, 2009

The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived: today we’ll witness the Shonen Jump Championship debut of Crimson Crisis ! Today lies the birth of a new Deck Type Blackwings which I hope to see. Spellcasters, Plants, Dragons, and Gladiator Beasts each get big boosts from the new set. As “big name” duelist after “big name” duelist arrives here at the first Shonen Jump Championship of the format. One fact grows clearer and clearer.

The dawn of a new meta will a rise this week.

Heading into this event it was still unclear whether top duelists were ready to adopt Assault Mode. For months now, we’ve seen the world’s greatest competitors cling to Tele-Dad. But with the new Advanced list hurting it, it seemed quite likely that the trend-setters and trophy-winners might just have to make some heavy changes or just completely change there whole deck. For some duelists in attendance today, like Dexter Dalit, Bobby Barone, David Everett, Omar Beldon and Nathan Strand just to name a few, and we even have competitors from the UK, Australia, Argentina and Egypt.

Today we’ll see some of North America ’s greatest teams go head-to-head, as some of the world’s best deckbuilders pull out all the stops. Top competitors here today include Josh Fulger, Nathan Kral, Kiet Bui, Tariq Willams, Marshaun Young, Andrew Tenjum, and many more. Each ready to make his or her bid for Shonen Jump glory. Today we can expect to see three big decks take center stage. Anybody playing a rogue strategy better be ready for them.

The first is Gladiator Beast, bolstered by the release of Gladiator Beast Samnite . Thanks to Samnite and its synergy with Rescue Cat the deck is now even faster, and many of the Gladiator duelists who saw previous success with that deck will opt to run this new version simply because it’s extremely familiar; it’s not hard to slip two or three copies of Samnite into an existing build.

Next up is Plants, likely to appear in one of two flavors. The first will be a basic build similar to what we’ve seen in the past, featuring Twilight Rose Knight and the American exclusive Violet Witch . The most successful builds will likely run Card of Safe Return as well, similar to the version played by Jerome McHale back in Detroit. With Violet Witch , Inmato , and Lone Fire effects loading the graveyard. That single copy of Card of Safe Reutn is just one of the many tricks to that can be pulled. The second iteration of the deck is just an extension of the first, packing Skill Drain to further abuse Violet Witch Known as the Plant version of Witch of the Black Forest. It’s unclear whether or not we’ll see that one today, but it could pop up.

Finally, a quick look around the tournament floor this morning reveals that Gladiator Beast are indeed back! Dedicated Gladiator builds will definitely be a factor here this weekend, though their future in this tournament may come down to the experience of their wielders; most Gladiator duelists that I’ve seen so far are up-and-comers, and some are experienced competitors. So expect to see Gladiator's with a strong Day 2 showing this week.

Meanwhile several other big-name competitors are playing to beat this metagame. I hear there is one competitor whom is packing an innovative Macro Cosmos build that I can’t wait to see in action. Others are running Monarchs, Gadgets, Little City, Zombies and Spellcasters. No Alien Showings yet, but the morning is still young.

Other cool deck picks that I’ve seen great builds of today include ZombieSworn, Stardust Buster (I was shocked), and a promising Lightsworn deck piloted by Team Face2Face members Dexter Dalit and Marshaun Young. This week is going to be a huge deal for dueling, and the format is way more open than I expected. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

There’s still some time left before the tournament begins, and we’re going to open up with a look at some of the coolest decks being played here today. Some will make it and some won’t — only time will tell.

Every duelist here today has been forced to innovate, but victory may go to those who have embraced the opportunity for change. Welcome to what promises to be one of the most shocking, exciting, and surprising events of the year. Also welcome to the Shonen Jump debut of Crimson Crisis . Welcome to Shonen Jump Championship New York City Online!

Round 1 Feature Match

Marshaun Young

March 24, 2009

Juan Santos has earned a reputation here in New York for repeatedly showings at Regional events. But now he’s in a whole new league, competing against a duelist that plays on a different level of competition — Tyler Andrade.

Game 1

Juan won the roll and opened with Solar Recharge, discarding Lumina, Lightsworn Summoner to draw two cards and send Necro Gardna and Celestia, Lightsworn Angel to the graveyard. Juan then activated Charge of the Light Brigade sending Allure of Darkness , Foolish Burial and Mirror force to the graveyard and search for Lumina. Juan then summoned Lumina Used her effect to chuck his in hand Garoth and Special Summoned Garoth to the field. He sets a backrow and ends his turn. He sent Garoth, Lightsworn Warrior, Lyla, Lightsworn Sorceress and Allure of Darkness to the graveyard. Then with Garoth he also sent Brain Control and a Charge of the Light Brigade.

Tyler started the game with Elemental Hero Stratos, searching out Elemental Hero Prisma before setting a whopping three cards to his back row then he ended.

Juan began his turn by using Lumina effect to grab Lyla from the graveyard y chucking a Lumina from his hand. As soon as Lyla touch the field Tyler flipped over Bottomless Trap Hole removing Lyla. Juan then try to atk over Stratos with Garoth and got shut down by Mirror Force, Losing Lumina and Garoth. In Juan's main phase 2 he played Monster Reborn Targeting his Celestia and ended his turn.

Tyler drew for his turn and played Cold Wave, he turn Stratos to Defence and set 1 monster and ended.

Juan was back up he had Celestia attack Stratos and he then ended his turn.

Tyler summoned Prisma and flashed Gyzarus, dumping Bestiari to the grave and Contact fusion for Gyzarus with his facedown Darius. Down came Gyzarus and Bottomless was flipped up but Juan lose his Celestia in the process. Tyler ended his turn his a sigh.

Juan dropped Monster Reincarnation chucking Destiny Hero - Malicious to get his Lumina back. Then Lumina came down next and made a direct attack, leaveing Tyler at 7000 LP to Juans 8000. Lumina effect sends Honest, Celestia, Lightsworn Angel and Charge of the Light Brigade to the graveyard.

Tyler played Gladiator Beast Darius and special Test Tiger and Tribute his Tiger to return Darius, Tyler Return Darius with his effect to fetch Bestiari from the grave. Down came Gyzarus destroying Juan's Lumina, Gyzarus attacked which was repelled by Necro Gardna. "Only if I had a Chariot" stated Tyler and he ended his turn.

Juan drew for his turn, " not much I can do" He ended his turn with a set monster.

Tyler Drew and summoned Murmillo, Gyzarus attack the facedown monster. It was a Gardna, Tyler also sent Murmillo to attack Juan took the 800 damage putting Juan at 7200LP. Tyler swapped his Murmillo for a pumped Laquari, and also swapped his Gyzarus for another pump up Laquari and a Samnite. Tyler Ended his turn.

Juan drew and just ended his turn with a set backrow.

Tyler Started his turn off with Samnite attacking directly connecting for 1600 LP, both Laquari followed soo after but Juan block the 1st Laquari attack with Gardna, but the second had made it threw dropping Juan to 3500 LP. Tyler swapped Samnite out for Bestiari only for Juan to Bottomless the newly Restricted bird. Tyler ended his turn.

Juan look at his graveyard for a few moments then removed Malicious, and summoned him in defence and also went to set one backrow. " OMG really Crush Card" Said Tyler "Yeah." replied Juan as he ended his Turn.

Tyler drew and summoned another Samnite and attack Juan Malicious Juan just scoop up his cards. " guess that wasn't a Crush Card"

Tyler Andrade takes a back-and-forth Game 1 after being down in field control early in the duel.

Juan started first and Dropped Charge of the Light Brigade, sending Honest, Lyla and a Charge of the Light Brigade to the grave from the top of his deck. Juan then summoned Lumina and discarded Malicious to the grave to get Lyla on the field. Ending his turn Lumina and Lyla effects sent Chaos Sorcerer, Necro Gardna, Dark Arm Dragon, Solar Recharge, Charge of the Light Brigade and another Solar Recharge. "What a crappy mill" says Juan.

Tyler drew Equeste down and attacked Lumina only for Juan to Honest Equeste. Tyler LP went to 7000LP, and again Tyler sets a whopping three cards to his back row before ending.

Juan drew and then activated Lyla effect Tyler chained Light-Imprisoning Mirror and Juan asked Head Judge Joe"can I still chuck with Lumina with the Mirror on the field", Yes replys Joe but her effects will be negated. Juan chucks Necro Gardna to the grave, and summons Garoth Tyler flipped Bottomless removing Garoth. Soon after Lumina attacked tyler for another 1000 LP. Tyler was taking a slow beat down.

Tyler drew but seem to not like his draw, He summoned Retiari and attack Lyla but Necro repelled the attack. Tyler sets one back row before ending.

Juan turned Lyla to attack mode and summoned Phantom of Chaos, but Tyler Solemned the Phantom dropping his LP to 3000. Juan sends Lyla to attack but tyler has another answer and he flips Book of Moon, stopping another attack. Juan then changes Lumina to defence and ends his turn.

"UGH, I need to rip a GB" says Tyler. Retiari attacks the facedown Lyla but another Gardna blocks the attack. Tyler ends his turn.

Juan flips Lyla and turn Lumina to attack mode, and attacks over Retiari with Lyla and Lumina mades a direct shot dropping Tyler to 1600 LP.

Tyler draws but looks really hard at his LP " you got it "

Juan Santos takes game 2 with an aggro mind set eve with Light-Imprisoning Mirror on the field.

Tyler starts off with a set back row and ends. What an odd play from a Gladiator Beast deck.

Juan use Mytical Space Typhoon to blast Tyler set Torrential Tribute, and summons Lumina and attacks dropping Tyler to 7000LP. Juan ends and mills Necro Gardna, Wulf and Honest.

Tyler draws and droppes Cold Wave and chains Book of Moon and targets Lumina, Tyler summons Darius and runs over Lumina and swaps out for Murmillo to destroy Wulf.

Juan draws and ends, Tyler draws and attacks with Murmillo but Necro stops that attack. Tyler then T-sets and ends his turn.

Juan flips Royal Decree in Tyler end phase Juan activate Foolish Burial sending Wulf to the field he then attacks over Murmillo and he ends.

Tyler draws and ends, Juan attacked again and ended, Tyler drew another Trap card and call it at that.

Juan Santos manages to make a comeback after a poor Game 1 to steal the match Giving Juan his 1st win here today.

Yeah, I had deleted the other one, because I saw that Sixth put another one up. Hopefully this will still turnout to be alright.

Like I said before, you shouldn't do stuff for the satisfaction of others, you should do it because it is something that you like to do. When you do things for the approval of others, you will never get anything out of it. If this was something that you really wanted to to benefit others instead of doing it for the +, it wouldn't matter if others are gracious or not. You know that you are doing a good job, so that is all that should matter. The reward will come with a job well done.
